Have you heard that Big Tobacco is doing this now?

Asked by Aster (20023points) August 10th, 2011

I saw on tv that tobacco companies are adding a chemical to cigarettes to make them more addictive than ever and some sort of flavorings to make them taste better. Has anyone else heard of these charges?

I heard that they were doing that years ago. That’s why when someone smokes, they don’t just smoke any brand, they are addicted to one in particular. Sickening eh?

{Edit} Oh, on second glance at your question, there must be something new, hopefully someone else knows..

I have not heard this.

I do know that most flavorings are now illegal in the United States. The reason why I can no longer get my favorite clove cigarettes unless I order them via Western Union from Indonesia (which I have totally done).

Chemicals wouldn’t shock me, but I think it would almost be a wasted exercise at this point. Cigarettes are slowly going the way of the dinosaur in the US, and nothing is going to stop that now. They would be much wiser to focus their efforts on the markets in Europe and Asia, where smoking is still very common and the laws restricting it are slim to nil.

It’s called “research and development.” They’ve always done this; they’ve just found a newer and better way to do it recently.

Philip Morris has been focusing on sales in Europe for some time now. Sales are booming there but have decreased in the US. A carton now averages $35 or more at our local grocery. where they are kept behind locked glass cabinets.
Cigs have over 600 chemicals added to them. And I heard last night that some of them are strictly to make them more addictive. The man who said this was fired from Philip Morris.

@tedd ah you felt the pain the the loss of cloves as well huh? Djarum blacks oh how I miss thee. i will occasionally order online but generally I just smoke the “cigars” just not the same though :(

@uberbatman I got the old style blacks from Indonesia about a year and a half ago. Ordered a case of them for cheaper than it would’ve cost when they still sold them here. Took me about a month to get them and the tracking option was hilarious to watch (i’m pretty sure it said loaded onto raft at one point). Finally though, I got them. 10x better than the crappy cigar ones.
