If a car is in your name and someone else drives it how do you check for tickets?

Asked by silky1 (1510points) August 13th, 2011

The address for the registration is hers so the tickets would not be mailed to me,also the address on my drivers license is hers for insurance purposes.

I would think if the car was in your name you can look up if there are tickets, no atter what the address. Maybe call either where you pay tickets where you live, or call a police station, NOT 911, and just ask.

I’ll send this to a police jelly.

Thanks see what they can do for me.

@silky He lives in Central Time, it’s 4:00 in the morning now, so it might take him a while to chime in.

@silky1, violations are given to the driver of the vehicle, not the vehicle. If there is an accident, then the contracted insurance company becomes involved. Either way, the driver is the responsible party, not the vehicle.

Most localities have an online court records system where you can check the dockets by name to see if there are any violations.

@bkcunningham Except in the case of red light cameras, those get mailed to the name and address on the registration. I believe a parking ticket for an unattended vehicle would also get filled out according to the registration of the vehicle. So, with that in mind, it’s very possibly for @silky1 to have tickets she’s unaware of if the person in possession of the vehicle does not tell her.

@silky1 I would call the non-emergency line for the police station and ask them if there are any unpaid tickets in your name. Then I would call the DMV and ask them for a copy of your driving record (which will show any recent paid tickets as well as unpaid tickets).

@JLeslie Ok I’ll check back Thanks. The fact of the matter is everything goes to her address so there really is no way of me knowing without personally checking on this.

@Seaofclouds Thanks it seems this is the way to go.

@Seaofclouds I wonder are the copies of driving records issued for free?

Seaofclouds's avatar

@silky1 I think that just depends on your DMV.

You are exactly right, @Seaofclouds. I didn’t even think about the parking tickets and cameras. But anyone can still use the online public court records check if it is available in your area.

I’m pretty sure there is a way to find out if there are any outstanding tickets on the vehicle. People misplace their mail, there has to be a way.

Your local police department will not want to get involved in a situation, like you have described. This is espcially true if you just call and ask.

You will have much better luck, if you ask for an officer to meet you somewhere and explain your situation. The officer will want to see your drivers license, to verify your request.

Calling the department is not a good idea for several reasons. One, all phone calls are recorded to your local and state police. These recorded conversations are public record and anyone can subpoena them for whatever reason. Two, most of the dispatchers are civillians and do not have the authority to check on this information. Only a sworn officer is allowed.

This probably can be accomplished, but you must go by procedure. jp

I have a few cop friends. Every now and then we have lunch and go over my past, just to make sure it’s clean enough to have lunch with my cop friends.
