Can parasites cause burn marks on skin?

Asked by tan235 (877points) August 28th, 2011

A friend of recently came back from Bali, she didn’t drink tap water but did shower in it and ate the food, she said that she felt really sick whilst over and came down with a really bad stomach cramps with all the classic symptoms of food poisioning – hugging the porcelain bowl.
She had it for a few weeks and then developed some weird burn marks on her skin, then she went to Mexico and came back with the same thing, she thinks it’s a parasite but doctor has told her it’s not fungal or bacterial, however she has massive burn marks which look as though they are peeling…. does anyone know what this is?
The second time in Mexico she didn’t get sick but she got the marks again – I think it’s a parasite but obviously I“m not a doctor and she can’t afford tests at this stage.
Thanks so much.

Find a dermatologist that is familiar with parasites from outside the US. My sister’s husband contracted malaria just before he left Africa. They had to switch doctors twice before they found one that knew how to treat it once they got home.

She should look to see if there is a nearby travel medicine clinic. If not, consider an infectious disease specialist to rule out a travel-related infection/parasite.

I had a similar experience on my first Bali trip in 2009! I had huge burns on my legs wrists n neck my legs were the worst looked like very bad jelly fish stings but I had only been in the water up to my knees and I didn’t feel anything sting me. I was very ill and the doctor over there told me it was probably jelly fish but I wasn’t convinced. It was such bad pain too!

Visable looking burns mainly on legs” I 1st went to Cancun in 2009 I had a few mosquito bites on the last day, 0n the plane my leg was hot and itchy and became red, close to the bite. When I arrived home it looked as though someone had swirled a flame over my leg the size of a hand. The doctor was convinced it was a burn! “Sure she did not believe me, said if you don’t have a fever nothing to worry about” 2 days later smaller patches arrived elsewhere over my stomach and arms? I went to a tropical infection guy a week later he did not know what it was, but said I should of been prescribed anti biotics? 1 years later I went back to cancun, same thing began after a bites, I took a antibiotic suitable for skin it did go! but the local doctor was not sure what it was? I am now here in Cancun dec 13 to my knowledge have not been bitten! but the doctor prescribed cortisone & anti histamine. this time I have large and small patches which look mainly like burns and act similar to burns “start red grow become a little hot, then go deep red then brownish and eventually fade” there mainly over my legs, in patches that dtarted like blotchy fat lines and a rash on one hand which now looks like a butn & like age spots on my hand? What is this?
