How do you define friends?

Asked by Londongirl (1880points) September 7th, 2011

To me friends are you share things and support each other when needed or you try your best to help out each other. But in London, I find many so called friends are more acquaintance, they like to meet you to go out dinning and drinking, but when you want to chat or a shoulder to cry on, they just not there, but they when need yours they expect you there.

So tell me how do you define friends nowadays?

A friend is someone you share personal information with and hang out and have laughs with. and depending on the level of trust in that friendship, a good friend you share lots of personal information with and hang out and have lot’s of laughs and even cry about the shitty things in your life. It all depends on the level of trust between you and said friend.

They are people that have your best interests at heart.

A friend is someone that’s got your back in good times and bad times.

It might be that you are running into the British reserve, but I find it hard to explain that lack of two-way sharing.

In any case, you seem to have found the wrong people.

My definition of friendship is much like yours.

A friend (to me) is someone with whom I feel comfortable speaking about personal things and that I know I can count on. I also use this silly rule of thumb- would I cry if they died? If I think I would, then it’s a pretty sure bet that I call them “friend”.

A friend will help you move. A best friend will help you move a body.

@all guys – I agree with you all about that definations. I think I do run into bad luck with guys and friends lately. But a couple of male friends by surprised are there when I am down. I thought my girl friend was my good friend but she seemed to be not available when I needed her in the bad time lately… I am well disappointed and now relooking at our friendship really…may be she’s a acquaintance afterall.

I let my friends define themselves.

Only time can tell or situation occurs that define what kind of friends they are.

I agree with this quote from Doug Larson:

“A true friend is one who overlooks your failures and tolerates your successes.”

Those who accept me for who I am and I accept for who they are.

My friends are people I want to share life with. If I go somewhere fantastic, I often wish particular friends were there with me. We gather for meals or just driving around nowhere, talking and catching up. Friends are people I like well enough to introduce to each other and it grows from there.

@Neizvestnaya Sounds beautiful… that is what friendship should be :)

This is an interesting question. Though there’s a lot that comes to my mind.
For the start your example. You need them but they are not there. That means they are not friends. But when they need you they want you there. Maybe they consider you to be a friend so that’s why they expect you to help out. Indeed friendship should go both ways but not all the times. Some only like to only receive instead of giving.
Friendship is about supporting those around you when they need it but telling the truth even when it hurts even with the risk of loosing them. [a friend cheats his wife with a family friend .. you don’t go and start to fix it .. you just explain the situation to the cheated party]. Why the hell should one call you a friend if you can’t tell him the truth even if it hurts.
Friendship is when one comes to you for help [and actually not needing that] and you make a good deed for him not helping. [a friend asks for money for one thing but you know he will either go drink them or buy drugs .. you do not help him].
Friendship is when a friend will do a crazy thing against what everyone does. [he is sure it’s the right thing]. You support him with no questions asked. [okay so he might want to go kill someone .. you do not do it with him but at least you try to make him stop]
Friendship means loyalty but not divided loyalty.
Friendship is a lot of things. Not only going out and partying and drinking together. A friend is someone you can call upon no matter what hour of the day and you know he will help [unless he’s in another town].
Friends are an extension of family!

A friend is someone who knows everything about you and still likes you.

@zensky there’s no one in this world that can know every thing about you ^^

@Hibernate I think he meant that they know all your flaws and still like you.

@zenksky totally agree with you…
