Where will you be tomorrow afternoon when the U.S. is hit with satellite’s debris?

Asked by Pandora (32211points) September 22nd, 2011

Its suppose to hit over a 500 mile area sometime tomorrow afternoon. Will you be inside or outside trying to see where its going to land. I heard on the news you won’t be able to see it until its pretty much over you. Are your plans to be inside and safe or will you take your chances? Satellite debris

Considering the reported size of some of the debris, inside may not be safe either. I don’t plan to do anything different than any other day.

I’ll probably be at home or out running an errand, who knows. I’m not worried I survived the reentry of Skylab.

:-)

Forgetting about this.

hiding in my basement

I will drink wine coolers on my roof.

So nothing different will be done.

I’ll likely be driving at the time (I would be anyway). Harder to hit a moving target, I hope!

I’ll be at home in England, most likely tending my garden…….. Should I be looking up?? :-/

Damn it all to hell, now I’ll be paranoid all day about this shit….

Your link says it probably won’t be over North America as it nears the earth, so I guess I am in the clear. Most likely I will be at home, I am usually home Friday afternoon, if it does hit anywhere.

A chunk the size of a fridge will probably wipe out a donkey in Peru. It won’t feel a thing, which is of some comfort to donkey lovers I suppose. I’m going to be wherever i’d be regardless of space debris falling from the sky.

I would not be inside thinking I am safe since space debris could easily have the speed to penetrate walls.

I am not going to worry about since the Earth is huge and the chances of being hit are minuscule.

Hopefully not under it; but based on the current model that shouldn’t be an issue. I wouldn’t mind being able to catch a glimpse of the reentry but again, based on the model, and the more practical fact of the all day rain we’re getting, that won’t be happening. As far as concern about being hit, nope, business as usual.

How fucked up is it that one of our satellites is going to hit some other country…....as if we need another reason for them to hate us.

Does NASA pay for damages?

JLeslie's avatar

@cheebdragon It probably won’t hit. It probably will burn up before hitting.

Scooby's avatar

Where do you get the claim forms just in case??? :-/

cheebdragon's avatar

Why bother releasing a statement if they don’t think is could hit something?

lillycoyote's avatar

@cheebdragon I believe NASA, or the U.S. government would pay for any damages. I was listening to a piece on NPR about this and the guy they interviewed said the owner of a satellite is liable for any damages caused should it reenter and hit a person or damage property. He also said that, were a piece of the satellite to land in your yard it would belong to the owner of the satellite not you, but since they are unlikely to ask for it back :-) you would almost certainly be able to keep it.

@Scooby and @cheebdragon Funny enough on the news they say that many home insurances include, space debris. Who knew? LOL
@Scooby, They also said that looking up probably wouldn’t help. You’ll be hit before you can move out of the way. I guess, you would get some time to kiss your ass good bye.

wundayatta's avatar

I’ve painted a target on the top of my head. I’m going up on the top of the tallest building in town and I’m going to pray.

Pandora's avatar

@wundayatta Let me know how that works out. LOL

wundayatta's avatar

They missed me. I’m totally bummed!

Scooby's avatar

@Pandora

My ass is intact ;-)

I thought it was only flies hitting the windscreen of a car that could kiss their asses goodbye Lol…...

Pandora's avatar

@wundayatta Oh, sorry your bummed but I’m glad your still around.
@Scooby Nope. You get smashed hard enough, I’m sure your be able to kiss it goodby. LOL

lillycoyote's avatar

@wundayatta Don’t worry, there’s another one coming; a German satellite that’s even bigger and may break into more pieces than NASA’s. Of course, the more pieces of debris, the better the chances of one hitting. You’ve got another chance coming in a few weeks or so.

wundayatta's avatar

Ok. I’m breaking out the folding chair and the champagne!

Scooby's avatar

@Pandora :-/ Ughhhh, Perish the thought Lol……
