If Chris Christie runs after saying he won't so emphatically for so long, can you trust anything he says?

Asked by ETpro (34605points) October 3rd, 2011

Christie has said no to running for the Republican nomination for president in 1012. He’s said no often. He’s said it emphatically. He’s explained his reasons for his no answer.

So if after all that, he reverses course and runs, what things he says can you trust? Will he be honest about everything else besides this one no-so-small thing?

And now he’ll explain his reasons for changing his mind, which he is entitled to do (and I understand he is a very influential speaker). As far as trusting anything he says…can you trust what any politician says? (IMHO). It’s going to be a very [REDACTED] presidential race.

tedd's avatar

lol… yes you could trust things he says… I mean to a point, he’s obviously still a politician.

As much as I disagree with a large portion of what Christie says/thinks/believes…. A man is entitled to change his mind.

I can trust him to know where the best place is to get a good sangwich I bet… but he didn’t have to lie for me to know he isn’t “trustworthy” he has his own agenda and he has made that screamingly apparent in opinion alone.

Haha, I agree with @AmWiser, but also isn’t he the one who said he wouldn’t run because he’s not ready to be president? Now that would scare me a bit.

AmWiser's avatar

@Mariah, right! What would make him think he’s ready now? I would think, who is behind him really running the office????.

SpatzieLover's avatar

If he does run, then I will presume he’s has been bought. Not a great way to start a campaign…but he’ll be following in the footsteps of many.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

Meh. That’s the kind of thing one can change their mind on, it’s not necessarily how they’ll do politics. Not that anyone does politics honestly these days.

No, like most politicians.

Christie is a wealthy and greedy pig. He lives in a very wealthy Community in Morristown, NJ. He believes as every Elitist does that the Middle Class or anyone who is not wealthy has No rights. He has hurt New Jersey’s Middle Class.
I am embarrassed at the thought of such a greedy pig in a literal and fugitive sense representing America.
You can not believe anything Christie says.
Christie would lay off every Firemen, Teacher or Policemen to balance the budget. His children attend the best private schools and he can afford private security. If he needs it.
People in Morristown pay Property Tax between ten and thirty thousand a year. He won by promising they wouldn’t go up anymore. He cut services and gave the biggest Tax breaks to the wealthiest. The man has No morals.

@AmWiser & @tedd I don’t accept moral relativism. Not all politicians are exactly the same. Mahatma Gandhi wasn’t exactly like Hitler or Pol Pot. I find it interesting that right wingers so often rage against moral relativism, but trot it out at every opportunity to clain their their own are no worse than any other politician. It’s simply not true. Not all people are exactly alike. Quite the opposite.

As you both note, Christie certainly has the right to change his mind. I respect that. But as @Mariah notes, the man said he would not run because he didn’t feel he was ready for the job of president of the USA. Setting that concern aside isn’t the sasme as simply changing your mond and deciding that the time is right.

@SpatzieLover I understand that several far-right billionaires have been putting up offers for that purchase. Of course, he’s to do their bidding once bought.

@philosopher I think that pretty well captures it. Now is his chance, because if we wait to see how his term as governor turns out, he won’t stand a snowball’s chance in Hell of getting elected to the highest office in the land.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@ETpro Yep, just like our Wis gov & the Mich gov….and the list goes on.

I wish more people had your intelligence.
I know people involved in Politics. They try to persuade my husband. We are not fooled.
I admit I prefer Romey to the rest of the R Wing but they all are wrong for America.
I wish Hillary could run again or Bill Clinton.

@philosopher ”. He won by promising they wouldn’t go up anymore. He cut services and gave the biggest Tax breaks to the wealthiest. The man has No morals.” Sounds like the standard Republican platform to me.

Ironically, voters will be smarter next time but they probably won’t have a chance to vote against this current breed of Republican governor. The are

@SpatzieLover Since he has decided against it, can we assume that the bids were not high enough or that someone elses bid NOT to run were higher?
Sad that I even think like this.

@Ron_C
People in NJ. are desperate for Tax cuts but he worked it out in favor of the wealthiest.
I feel that the Middle Class is getting screwed again. Christie laid off Fireman,Policemen and Teachers. They are hard working Middle Class people. Did you see the story about the Helicopter crash in NYC? The Police and Fireman saved three life’s. We all need them.
Some Republicans are worse than others.
When the Democrats betrayed Hillary Clinton they screwed all moderates. Hillary would have straighten this Economy by now. She would not placate Terrorist. Obama has put us in a bad situation. He is a nice guy and that is his problem. He should have told the Conservatives No from the start. He should have told Pelosi that he is the President. He was perceived as weak and they all took advantage. He should have supported Israel. Not doing so may cost him the election. Israel is our alley.

rojo's avatar

@Ron_C You are probably right about Israel and I guess it is best to remember that the best place to get mugged is in an alley.

Ron_C's avatar

@philosopher you are probably right about Obama being too nice. I think his teaching position lead him to believe that people in Washington would do what was best for the country. The Washington crowd does what’s best for themselves and their owners. Poor Obama, he though slavery was over; it just changed color. Ms. Clinton probably would have done better, everybody’s scared by her. She would have walked right over the reactionary right and the conservative Democrats.

ETpro's avatar

Thanks everyone. He said no again. What does that change?

philosopher's avatar

@Ron_C
I couldn’t have written it better.
I think Romey will win. He is more moderate than Perry. They are full of S____T.
I hope he is not anti research. Our Economy can not thrive without all types of research.

Mariah's avatar

@ETpro Now I’m wondering if the whispers saying he might run were anything more than rumors.

@Ron_C
Every time I see that other people are aware and question the Status Quo it gives me hope.
People are protesting in Manhattan. I dislike Protest but some of the issues they are concerned with I relate to. The problem with Protest are some idiot always incites violence and some sheep follow.
Sadly the Politicians refuse to listen to Middle Class people. I pray change will come without violence.

ETpro's avatar

@Mariah Your question is porfound. After all, how many times did the guy say “No!”?

Ron_C's avatar

@philosopher the protests in New York and other cities are made up of middle class and especially young people who can’t get jobs and are saddled with large college debts. Actually they are made up of the same sort of people that demonstrated and overthrow the government in Egypt. The main difference is that they are fighting Banks, International big business and their congressional toady’s. They may be much harder to overthrow than a single dictator.

Frankly I support the protests and I’m surprised that they hadn’t happened sooner. I understand that they are now infiltrated with people from the Tea Party and other entities that are working to turn the protests violent and discredit the protesters. This is a time proven tactic that was started when unions were first formed. The goal is to maintain the power of people in charge.
