Where can I host a new simple machines forum? How can I convert a kunena forum to a simple machines forum?

Asked by kounoupi (802points) October 11th, 2011

It’s been almost a year now that my friends and I have set up a nice kunena forum (based on joomla). Our community is small, only 50 registered members and only about 10 simultaneously online. Our problem now is, we are about to lose server space, so we have to give up on the joomla website. Yet we don’t want to see our forum being deleted. So here I am, looking for a possible solution to this.

Since kunena proved lower of our expectations, and since we are forced to go through this change no matter, we decided that choosing another format would be great. Our best bet at the moment is SMF, due to their good feedback plus we find SMF much more to our tastes.

The problem though will be the same; we need a free server host that will allow us to set up one SMF and a way to convert our existed (kunena) forum.

So here I am asking you fellow Flutherites:
1) Could you possibly point me to a good, reliable and free (even with adds) hosting service that would easily host a SMF?
Hosting service has to be free, since that’s what’s causing the problem in the first place; we just can’t afford to keep renting server space.

2) Could you possibly suggest one good kunena to SMF converter?

We could restart our community using one of the free forum services, the main problem in that is we have no idea how to tranfer our existing forum to these services, which is vital for us. We also want to be able to back up our forum archives at any time, which (to my knowledge) means most, if not all, free forum providers are not of much help.

If I have left out any necessary information, I will be happy to clarify :)

(1) Have you considered hosting your own website on your own computer? You can do it for free with Apache and no-ip . I did this a little while ago and it was challenging, but when it all came together it was quite a lot of fun.

(2) Have you taken a look at this ?
