Why would a man in a suit and a cop be looking for me?

Asked by ItalianPrincess1217 (11979points) November 12th, 2011

I received a phone call from an old neighbor today saying that there have been 2 men looking for me. One in a suit and one was a cop. All they said was it was a legal matter. The problem is, they left no phone number or information. Now I’m worried out of my mind thinking I’m going to jail! How in the world am I supposed to find out why these mysterious men are trying to find me? As far as I know, I haven’t done anything serious! I have unpaid debt. Could this be the issue? I’m filing for bankruptcy with my tax return in a few months. Not sure if that matters. Please put my mind at ease. All I keep thinking is that I’m going to get a knock on my door one day and be handcuffed and taken away from my newborn! :(

Why don’t you call the police station and put your mind at ease? It could be anything and if you sit around worrying about it, you are going to make yourself sick. As you have said, you haven’t done anything seriously wrong so there is no reason to worry they are going to put you in jail.

Sounds like one of your creditors is serving papers on you.

I agree with @chyna , probably best if you just ask them. It may be something as simple as needing information about someone you know, or the whereabouts of an ex or a relative.
@Adirondackwannabe : Probably not a creditor serving, they have process servers for that, and they usually seem to be young people in hoodies. I used to have a neighbor that was constantly being served by creditors…

I would think downstate they have a cop with them. You’re right about the suit though.

You just need to calm down okay. If you’ve done nothing wrong that you can’t be arrested. Just go to the police station and ask them what’s going on. They’ll explain everything. Is it possible that you’re neighbor is pulling a cruel joke on you? I mean if they were looking for you and one is a cop all they would have to do is search your name up and they’ll find you that easily.

I don’t know how it works your side of the screen, but here they would not send just one cop if they planned to arrest you, it would be at least two. Chances are the cop is there as a witness or as protection for the guy in the suit.

It probably is the debt thing that this is all about, police will maybe leave you alone if you are killing people or selling drugs, but if you owe money they will always come for you.

Were you a witness to a crime? The police(and a detective)came to your house for a reason. The reason could be anything. Best bet is to beat the horse before the race and call the detective bureau where you live and inquire.

Could be you might have an outstanding warrant for some offense. Better to call and inquire, rather than the alternative….right?

Yes, they may not be so much interested in you as they may be interested in someone you know or something you might know about. @john65pennington is right, you should probably ask the detective bureau. And he would know about this better than I, but it seems odd that they didn’t leave a card with your neighbors if they couldn’t find you, so you could get in touch with them. If it was important enough for them come by in person it seems like they would have left a way for you to contact them. That seems odd to me but maybe not.

I’m not aware of any reason they’d want to talk to me. I didn’t witness any crimes or accidents. I don’t know any criminals that they would need information about. The only thing that makes sense to me is the debt. A detective? Is that whole the suited man was? Or could it be the server?

@ItalianPrincess1217 I have sadly been in this situation, debt collection, and I have never, ever heard of anyone sending a uniformed officer and a guy in a suit to deal with debt collection. Collection agencies generally don’t work that way and may even be prohibited from doing so by law, I’m not sure what the restrictions on that are, but they police don’t get involved in debt collection. I’m pretty sure of that. And maybe there is someone you know and you just don’t know that the police may suspect them of a crime. Or they might just be trying to get in touch with someone you know as part of an investigation, even if that person isn’t a criminal. I admit, it would have me worried and on edge. No one wants the the police showing up out of the blue, trying to find you and you not knowing, at all, what it’s about.

@ItalianPrincess1217 They could still be looking to ask you about someone you know even if you don’t know any criminals. We’ve had guys in suits come to our house to ask about a family friend who was applying for a job with high security clearance at a nearby air force base. They wanted to know about his character, etc.

Assuming everything turns out ok, please come back and tell us what it was… I know my curiosity is piqued.

I have had people like that coming around to ask about neighbors/friends who were trying to get on with the FBI or CIA. You could plug in your name on your county court’s website to see if any suits come up. I feel for you with having to wait, I hope you find out what is going on very soon.

In the event that it was simply someone trying to serve me papers, what happens if they never find me to actually serve me? I have no idea how to find out who would be serving me and for what. If I never receieve the notice to show up in court, will there be a judgement against me or a warrant? What could happen in this situation?

“I received a phone call from an old neighbor today saying that there have been 2 men looking for me.”

Do you no longer live in the neighborhood where the two men were looking for you? Did your old neighbor say whether they asked for your current address?

I doubt that a cop would accompany a process server for a civil matter, but if they were trying to serve you papers, it’s their duty to make a reasonable effort to serve you at your current address, unless you were/are associated with a business. In that case, they can serve the papers at the business address.

@Brian1946 No, I don’t live there any longer. They went to my old apartment building and the new tenants said they didn’t know me or where I live. Another neighbor (who does know me) heard about it and passed along the message. The men only said it was a legal matter.

@ItalianPrincess1217 Depending on what they were trying to serve you with, they may publish a notice in the paper since they weren’t able to serve you. I know that when I was going through my divorce/custody/child support stuff with my ex, I had to publish a notice in the paper since I was unable to actually have him served with the court papers. Unfortunately, there’s no easy way for you to know if or when it would be published in the paper. You could try calling the local police station or court house to see if they have any information.

If a notice is published in the paper and then you don’t respond or show up, yes, a judgement could be made against you (in some cases). That’s what ended up happening with most of my custody/divorce/child support cases.

I had two officers in suits come to my door about an investigation. They could want you for questioning… An investigator is the only person I could think of going to some ones door in a suit… As for you getting arrested, I think your fine. Just stay calm and give them a call.
