What is this bug I just caught?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) November 16th, 2011

I just caught something that was crawling up the wall of my office. It’s about 1½ inches long, slender, about ⅓2 of an inch wide, with long antenna, and 14 legs on each side. The legs get progressively longer as they go down the body. The front ones are a little over ¼ inch and the back ones are almost an inch long. It’s light gray almost cream colored. I don’t have a camera.

@thorninmud That’s it exactly. I’ve never seen one before. Can it bite?

They have the equipment to sting (venom injected through modified legs), but I don’t know how inclined they are to use it against humans. They’re formidable hunters of other bugs.

@thorninmud Thanks. Then should I release him outside?

thorninmud's avatar

That’s what I do. FWIW, I’ve scooped them up with my bare hands on occasion, and never had a problem.

Okay, that gives him a chance to find some shelter.

If you have a can of airduster you can hold it upside down and spray them with it. It looks pretty cool and lets you get them even if they crawl under something.

He’s outside and free.

Wow, surprises me that you haven’t seen a centipede before.

Centipedes make pretty good pets. All you have to do is give them a name and they will come when you call. But it is a problem keeping them in shoes.

Wow I’ve never seen a centipede that looks like that. Pretty cool. :)
