Herman Cain -- Serious candidate for president, or best comedy performance art project in US history?

Asked by ETpro (34605points) November 18th, 2011

Most of us caught on to the 9–9-9 reference to Sim City, or at least read about it after the Makers of Sim City made an attack/joke ad pointing it out. But lots of these Cain’s art referencing art went right over my head. How about you?

Watch the video listing the “gaffes” that weren’t really gaffes at all, but were darned good art commenting on pop art. What do you think? Is Herman Cain a presidential candidate to be taken very seriously, or a great performance art referencing art project, perhaps the greatest ever? Be patient. The video covers cultural references in general in politics before getting to the art project formerly known as Herman Cain. listing the “gaffes” that weren’t really gaffes at all.

There was an interview where he was asked whether or not he agreed with Obama’s actions in Libya. He just sat there, and did not know what to say.
Afterwards he was asked by a reporter if that shows that he has no idea about foreign policy, and he responded by shouting “999”.
Serious candidate? No.

Megalomania is often hard to distinguish from performance art. I think Cain is pretty clearly the former, though.

He thinks he is a serious candidate. The rest of the world, save a few, are seriously hoping his “campaign“is a piece performance art.

…and his pizzas are a joke.

I think he is a serious candidate, which indicates the abysmal state of the Republican party in this country. Next up will be Newt Gingrich, another poor choice. As @Qingu suggested, overconfidence and egomania seem to be the key commonalities. Mitt Romney looks good next to them because he’ll go any direction that seems advantageous at the moment.

@ragingloli I saw that, and thought it was like a GOv. Perry deer-in0the-headlights moment. Little did I know he was rerunning every movie and pop song in recent history, looking for some line that referenced Libya or Colonel Qaddafi,

@Qingu Maybe. But the matches to the Pokemon Movie are too perfect to be coincidence. Either he saw the movie and the lines just bubbled up in his mind, or that was clearly comedic art referencing art.

@SuperMouse Actually, I am hoping against hope he can recover his frontrunner status and win the Republican nomination. But of course, I want Obama to win reelection—not liking what I hear from any of the Republican candidates.

@AstroChuck I haven’t tried them. I will take your word for it, though.

@Sunny2 Thanks. Very true.

@ETpro his winning the nomination would be a gift to the Democratic party and Mr. Obama. I for one would rejoice.

I saw Rachel Maddow’s piece and almost sent it to you.

See here too.

I think ‘performance art’ is too good a name for it.

Herman Cain
Sarah Palin
Rick (Oops) Perry.

Has the Republican party gone mad?

Like he said, “I’m not supposed to know anything about foreign policy.” Finally a man that speaks the truth.

Cain’s candidacy swims with the anchovies.

@SuperMouse That was my point. But Newt would do too. As would Michelle Bachmann, Rick Santorum, Rick Perry, Ron Paul…

Listening to Perry claiming that Obama was raised in an atmosphere of privledge (Dad left the family when he was two, he was raised by his young monther, sometimes forced to go on food stamps, and his maternal Grand Parents. Yeah, I think this primary race is a contest to see who can tell the most outrageous, obvious lie. That’s what the Republican base now seems to expect in a “Leader, not a reader.”

Good gravy! That line should be “Cain’s candidacy sleeps with the anchovies”.

I shouldn’t contribute here when I am overtired.
