How great is the Samsung Galaxy II cellphone?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) December 21st, 2011

If you own one of these phones, what are the pros and cons of it? Santa is bringing one to my wife and I need to know what to expect from it. Question: can you clue me in on what to expect with this new phone? Any problems?

I have a Samsung Galaxy. Mine is about a year old so I think you are talking about a newer model. I find mine very easy to use. It does everything I need and really, I don’t use most of its features. No problems with it so far (touching wood now). It hasn’t given me any problems. My husband has one too and uses his much more than me and his is working fine too. Not sure if that helps.

Bellatrix, thanks. So far, it sounds promising.

My husband has the Galaxy II, likes it much better than his iPhone3g. I’m thinking about changing from my iPhone. Seems much easier, no need to sync it to a computer.

My dad has used several different models of smartphones and he swears by his Galaxy S II. He said it is the best he has ever used and since he has been grandfathered into an unlimited plan with AT&T he doesn’t have to worry about data usage. That’s the only thing about smartphones, for me at least: you really have to pay attention to how much data you use. It’s easy for most people to go over the limit. I have been great at monitoring my usage so far, but if your wife hasn’t used a smartphone before then that’s something to think about (especially since there is so much to use the Galaxy for.)

It’s hard for me to imagine anything bad coming out of Samsung. My wife has had a Samsung brand phone for a few years and it’s been a good one so I got a Samsung when it was time to change and I really like this one (r451c) which was a big change for me because I am a minimalist at heart and this model has tons of features, some I even use.

I wouldn’t recommend going for Android. I’ve used Android and iOS, and I’d say go for iOS.

I have had no end of trouble with mine. It has been in for repairs for nine weeks since September. The service from Samsung has been appalling. I am telling everyone I meet not to buy Samsung.

I have an Android phone by Samsung and I wouldn’t recommend Samsung either…

The biggest downside I can think of is a mental block against non-Apple products. There are many people that believe that Apple has a monopoly on ease of use and that anything that is either similar, identical, or better but lacks the Apple logo is hard to use.
But even setting brand bias aside, any smartphone has a lot of features. It is easy for some people to get overwhelmed by the options they have. What apps are safe to download and which will infect my phone with Ebola Zaire and staple my dog to my front door? What does this do? How do I….?
One way or another, I think fear may be your biggest issue. When I dragged my wife kicking and screaming into the 21st-century, she feared her Droid. Now? Well, she doesn’t get as much out of hers as I do, but she appreciates the things that it does that her old phone couldn’t.

@O_o It’s a “Your mileage may vary” thing. I tried/ learned iOS before Android and found Android simpler. And guess which OS crashed on me more often? Hint: it wasn’t Android! And I am not the only person I know that migrated from iOS and found Android easier and better.

As for the Samsung, I know my other Samsung things (including a Trance phone and an MP3 player) have been tough and reliable for far longer than I expected; again, YMMV.

Update: Santa brought my wife a Samsung GalaxyII s and she absolutely loves it. Matter of fact, she loves it so much that I am thinking about contacting a divorce attorney.

I can see the headlines….“Hubby sues wife, Samsung wins”.
