It's Westminster time again! Jellies, what's your favorite breed of dog?

Asked by JilltheTooth (19787points) February 12th, 2012

I’ve had me a mess of different breeds of dogs, and they’re all different and have different traits to recommend them. I’m always a bit curious about what other people like about various breeds. I’ve had Chessies, a Brittany, a Golden, a Westie, and Zuppy is a Puli.

The orignal, the WOLF.

I’m a hound lover from way back. I especially love the Bloodhounds, Foxhounds, and Harriers.
I also like the sight hounds, Greyhounds, Borzois and Salukis. The scent hounds are not known for their brains, but what they lack in their boneheadedness they more than make up for in presence and voice. I also love German Shepherds and Bernese Mountain dogs.

I’m not a good judge. I love every dog I meet And they like me, I think I speak Dog. I have been called Dr. Doolittle on several occasions.

But corgi’s have become popular around here in the last year and they’re impossibly cute. They’re like cartoons of cute dogs!

The Basset Hound!

(I am pretty sure that I could name almost every dog breed. Post a picture and I’ll tell you what it is).

Boxers are my personal favorite, but I love watching all of them. All dogs are beautiful to me.
I love when they act silly too.

I love all dogs! But I am afraid of pitbulls and doberman pinchers.

My favorite exotic dog is the Bouvier de Flanders

Some of the cutest dogs are Pugs and Boston Terriers which I would describe as “flat faced cuties.”

but I also have a fondness for dogs with little beards like Schnauzers and Scottish Terriers

Then I like the droopy eared dogs like Basset Hounds and Blood Hounds

And I will always have a soft spot in my heart for scruffy mixed breed mutts like this guy

As an adult, I’ve only had two dogs. An Irish Setter that was the most beautiful but dumbest dog I’ve ever been around. In fairness, I was too young to understand how hard it is to have a dog and train a dog.

The second and last dog I had was an Australian shepherd. Hands-down, by far the smartest dog in the world. I’m highly allergic to dogs. I’ve never really liked little dogs. But at this time in my life, I’m thinking I want a itsy, bitsy, teeny weenie dog what doesn’t shed, doesn’t need to be walked and only poops turds the size of rabbit pellets or smaller.

If that search fails, which I suspect it may, I’m in the market for an Havanese. I love the standard poodle. Also, border collies are smart and beautiful and one of my favorites. The westies are diggers, or so I’ve read. It was going to be my next dog until I heard that.

I love big (Standard) poodles with non-sissy haircuts.

They’re super-smart and athletic.

Labrador retrievers, mainly for their temperament.

The Border Collie has and always will be the top dog.

His brain and intelligence is unsurpassed in any other dog breed.

@Coloma : Their Brittanies may have come from a dumb line. In general I found them to be very smart dogs, with a quirky sense of humor.
@john65pennington; Actually, there were a couple of studies done that found Borders to be near the top, but not all the way there, but herding dogs always tend to fill the top 5 slots. And no, I can’t find the studies, they were done pre-internet and may not even be on the net… :-)

Don’t know much about dogs, but I love the Irish Wolfhound.
They’re pretty big, but apparently they’re pretty friendly. which is a bit odd, since those were used to hunt down wolves before. Still, I love em, and they look all soft and cuddly. Still, I’m dead scared of dogs…but maybe if I raised one as a puppy, that fear would be overcome. I’d like to have one of those, but I’m guessing you need a hell of a lot of room…

@Symbeline : No, you really don’t need a lot of room. Like a lot of really large dogs they seem to be hyper aware of space and don’t take up as much room as they would seem to. Some kind of doggie interdimensional phase shifting thing, I think! Zuppy, however, topping out at 40 pounds, manages to overwhelm any area he’s in. The Irish Wolfhounds are fabulous dogs! I love ‘em!

Labrador Retrievers, Siberian and Alaskan Huskies, Great Danes, Irish Wolfhounds, Border Collies, Dalamatians. But Harlekin Great Danes are the prettiest, in my opinion :)

The Skye Terrier followed very closely by the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. For the Brits, we have Crufts next month.

JilltheTooth's avatar

@Leanne1986 : I hate that I have to wait to get Crufts on TV, usually for a month or two, then it’s some Animal Planet special that I have to search for… maybe I can find highlights online this year…

A German Shephard and West Highland White Terrier.

downtide's avatar

@Leanne1986 The Staffy would be high up on my list too. Again, they’re extremely friendly, loving dogs, as long as they’re properly trained and socialised. (Contrary to popular belief they do not inherently hate other dogs, they’re just trained by irresponsible owners to be aggressive).

KatawaGrey's avatar

Westies are definitely right up there for me. So are Bulldogs and Greyhounds. My best friend has a couple Mastiffs and I’ve fallen in love with these dogs.

Kardamom's avatar

The Kerry Blue Terriers are pretty sweet too.

@KatawaGrey Oh yeah, how could I not think of bulldogs, they are so sweet and I love to hear them snort. There’s a bulldog on my block called Leroy. Poor Leroy had one of those veterinary funnels on his head last week and I went over there to give him a pet and he was so bummed that he couldn’t give me a kiss! And he was super stinky because they couldn’t bathe him while he was still wearing the funnel. Don’t worry, nothing serious. Leroy had a little problem with his eyelid turning in a little bit and his lashes were irritating his eyes, so he had a very small surgery to correct that problem.

@JilltheTooth I think the link that I posted usually show live footage!

@downtide My Staffy loves everyone, humans and dogs, and fully expects everyone to love her back!

@Leanne1986 : Thanks! I love watching!
