My cat is sick. Help?

Asked by Facade (22937points) March 18th, 2012

I think my cat tried to eat my french fries when I wasn’t looking, and he’s been throwing up since last night. Cleaning it up this morning, I found a very small amount of blood and bodily tissue. He hasn’t had his food since last night, and we’ve tried to give him Pedialyte (read that it was good for dehydration).
We’re going to take him to the vet tomorrow, but what can we do for him until then?

What do you mean by bodily tissue? Are there bits of solid cat food in the vomit? Is there froth?

In any case, is there any emergency vet service near you? Skipping food for 24 hours is not the end of the world but is he drinking water?

Tomorrow seems a long way away if your beloved cat is ill.

I can only write to you what happened three months ago with our kitty.
She behaved very sick and strange on a Sunday morning.
I called the vet and told her the things that we saw in our cat, the way she moved and behaved.
She said that we could wait one day and go to the regular vet, but if we wanted to be sure we could vist her (the weekend vet).
We doubted a couple of hours but then decided to go to the weekend vet anyway.
Unfortunately our kitty could not be saved anymore.
If you have the possibility, for kitty’s well-being, I think it would be wise to visit (or maybe let one come over?) a vet today.
I wish you and your pussycat good luck.

I agree with @gailcalled and @rebbel. Take them to an emergency vet immediately. I don’t like the sound of those symptoms. I wish I could be of further help. I hope your cat is okay, really. Reading your question made me think of how I would feel if anything happened to my cat Lion. I couldn’t handle that.

He ate some food about an hour ago. He just threw up again after not doing it in a few hours.

Take it to an emergency vet ASAP. Good luck and I hope everything turns out okay <3

If he’s attempting to eat and drinking water you can probably wait until tomorrow. Watch for lethargy and unexplained hiding or attacking. That would mean your cat is in pain.

Fries aren’t gonna kill your cat. He might have a hairball or an inflamed tummy for some reason.

Just keep watch.

It’s a tough call, because ER vets are so expensive, but if you don’t take him to the vet ASAP and something bad happens, you’re going to feel guilty, so I would take him to the ER vet if I were you. Plus if he’s suffering, you want to get him some relief. Is he acting normally otherwise? Is he lethargic?

Hey guys, We’re back from the vet. He had a fever, and they said he has gastroenteritis. They gave him a shot of antibiotics and some pills as well. He’s eating and drinking, so I think he’ll be fine in a few days.
Thanks for all of your help!

Great that you now know what is wrong with him, and thanks for the update!
In case you haven’t done already, here is something to read on gastroenteritis in cats.
