Does a landlord have to provide mosquito netting for windows?

Asked by tan253 (2948points) June 4th, 2012

Summer is coming and our house is full of mosquitos, we seem to be the only apartment on the block that doesn’t have mosquito netting in the windows – is this a landlord responsibility or do we have to get it done – oh we are in NYC!
I can’t find anything online.

Thanks x

You can check NYCHA regs, but almost certainly not. Either way, it’s a pretty inexpensive modification.

yeah I thought it might be a requirement due to West Nile but I’d say you are right – and I did just look on line it’s not expensive – why on earth do we need mosquitos? I don’t understand!!!!

@tan253 Mosquitos are an important food source for many birds

You can buy a screen that fits in an open window. It slides to adjust in size, you just open your window and pop it in between the bottom of the window and the sill. They’re very inexpensive made of cheap wood and screen, and no trouble to pop in and out daily. Home Depot Probably has them or a local hardware shop. My sister has one in NYC and I bought one here in TN. I think I bought mine at Home Depot or Lowes.

Just a reminder, open window are very dangerous for young children who have started crawling and moving on their own in general. Make sure you open windows are safe for your baby.

What does the lease say?

According to HUD regulations, no they are not required.

Whether their required or not, they SHOULD! If you moved in recently you really need to make sure that it is noted on your move in inspection, otherwise they might try to charge you for them when you move out.
I would ask them (in writing) to provide them. All they can say is no, right?

What you can do, in NYC, is contact DEP to investigate for nearby standing water.

@Judi Many buildings in NYC don’t have screens on their windows. My condo on South Beach in Miami didn’t either for that matter. Maybe in NY they do screen if you are on on a lower floor? My aunt has never had screens in the 30 years she has lived in her building, I know my sister’s old building didn’t have screens, not sure about her new one, I don’t remember even though I have opened her windows,

What was really surprising to me in TN is non of the houses had screens. We had to put up our own. I live in the woods, the amount of flying insects is ridiculous. I have never bought a house that did not have screens.

Being from California, that seems so strange to me. we don’t even have that many flying bugs but screens seem to be required. If I were th OP I would still ask though. All they can say is no.
As a landlord you would be surprised at the things I say yes to in order to keep a happy customer.

@judi I have a feeling mosquitos aren’t very high up? Not sure though. My aunt never had a bug problem with her windows open, she is on the 8th floor. On South Beach I was on the 5th floor about a mile from the beach, and there are almost no bugs near the ocean.

They like standing water with no wind. Here in central California they have an aggressive mosquito abatement program. I don’t think I’ve seen any since I’ve been in this town, maybe a few when visiting the forest.

Mosquitos usually aren’t that common in NYC, AFAIK, but we’ve had a wet year. NYDEP actually writes tickets for standing water though, I believe. Even in cemeteries.
