How do I download pics on my Mac?

I have a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.8.2. Occasionally, I’ll get an e-mail that contains a photo. The text appears, but the photo doesn’t. I have a feeling this only happens when the e-mail comes from a PC platform. How do I remedy this problem.

Photos are generally in platform-agnostic formats like JPEG, so that isn’t it.
