What do you think about Hillary Clinton's testimony on Benghazi?

Asked by jca (36062points) January 24th, 2013

This guy in my FB posted a rant about Hillary Clinton’s testimony on Benghazi. Among other things, he criticizes her for taking responsibility for it, saying that it’s meaningless since there are no consequences for her. Now of course, if she did not take responsibility for it, he’d be criticizing her for that.

I am curious what other Jellies think about Hil’s testimony on Benghazi. Do you think it would hurt her chances or help her chances of ever becoming President of the US, if she ever chose to run?

She was awesome. 6 hours of testimony with no notes. Rand Paul made himself look a little more foolish than normal when, while indulging his insane fantasy that he is going to be President, he seemed to suggest that any secretary of state should read ALL diplomatic cables involving any or the plethora of hot spots on Earth. Perhaps he thinks there are 400 hours per day available to a Secretary of State for reading cables, plus plenty of time left to act on them. No need for any staff. Staff is pork.

The way she came back at that one senator who didn’t even bother to attend the briefings made my heart sing. Go get em Hillary! It was enough to ward off anyone who says a woman could never get tough enough against a foe.
I think her health would hurt her chances more than this. I hope she spends the next 4 years getting into the best health of her life.

It made me really, really sad. These congressmen and senators are skipping intelligence briefings and getting all of their facts from Fox News and conservative talk show hosts. I had hoped that at these high levels people realized conservative media is just for rubes. Apparently, the rubes have gotten elected to congress, and include classified briefings as part of the left wing media.

@Imadethisupwithnoforethought I don’t think this is total ignorance on their part. I think they are trying to get something against her on record so that it can be used if she runs for president. I actually don’t think she will run – if she were going to, I think she would have continued on as sec. of state. I suspect she is not well, and even if she’s perfectly fine, I think a lot of others are thinking the same thing, which as @Judi said, will hurt her chances.

I note that right wing radio focus on her words ”... what does it matter…” but that is where they stop. They do not include any of the intro or the rest of the statement. Their thing is to try to tie this statement with the fact that four people are dead and try to make the connection that she, and by association the administration, do not care. What about the rest of her testimony?
My gut reaction is that the Senators look like dicks; pursuing their own interests by trampling on someone else.
When I hear one of the talking heads question why she would say that, my initial reaction is to say because it is politically incorrect to say “go fuck yourselves” to a bunch of senators. Even though that is what she needs to actually say.

I think she handled herself and her detractors beautifully, she is my hero. The last time the country felt safe and sound (financially and otherwise) was when Bill was in the white house and she was there with him. Let’s hope people wake up and put her (and him) back in there again.

I admire her for getting pissed off at that idiot Johnson. He was not there to investigae, he was there to insult and demean. Good for Hillary.

It was the first debate of the 2016 presidential campaign. The Republicans would love to hang a sign on her that says “Responsible for 4 dead Americans in Benghazi”.

Hurrah for Hillary! She didn’t take shit from those grand-standers on the committee.
Hillary for president in 2016 and 2020. She is like Barrack Obama with balls!

I’m still bitter from her loss in the 2008 primaries. I think she handled herself well and she proved that she can handle anyone who debates her. She’s intelligent, strong, yet speaks from the heart with ease. I hope she takes the next two years to get the rest she needs. There was an interview with Bill many months ago and he was asked if he thought Hillary would run in 2016. Bill said that she has worked hard for many years and all she wanted at that time was a chance to sleep in her own bed for more than two nights in a row. She’s looking forward to some rest, but running in 2016 was not out of the question. I wish I could remember where I saw this interview. Sorry for not giving a source.

Hillary’s testimony just made me love her more. She’s a good role model and I think she would make one hell of a President. Bill as first man! omg I would love this!

To quote her own words, “At this point, what does it matter?”

It’s a political side show for conservative idiots Congressmen to try to make points for their side. Unfortunately, since their side is intellectually bankrupt, there is nowhere for them to go, except to make themselves look stupider than they actually are.

I think that Hillary handled all of the questions very well. The Republican ‘Inquisitors’ were not trying to do anything other than to tag her with being responsible for the deaths in Benghazi. I do not think that she will run for President in 2016 – personally I think she is tired, but I do think that she would make a very capable President.

It matters. All the details do. How do we expect to “prevent this type of tragedy from happening again” if we do not examine every single minute detail front to back and side to side? Why she lost it at the mere suggestion we look into these is telling. It is only a natural reaction whenever there is a huge blunder to want to down play details. They are tired of discussing this and want to move on. Simply falling on her sword taking the blame doesn’t cut it for some people apparently.

How many people felt better when Bush took the blame for the FEMA fuck ups during Katrina? Not this guy.

Hillary doesn’t need balls, she has courage, strength and smarts, these attributes do not depend on testicles for their existence.

@rooeytoo Yes. Thank you. Well said.

I found the whole thing to be quite uninformative. In the interest of full disclosure, I remember the testimony from Oliver North on Iran-Contra and thought he was brilliant. So I can understand why some would feel that Hillary was brilliant by not really supplying any information.

I do find it interesting that she was completely unaware of the security issues. I have no problem believing she doesn’t read all the emails but Stevens was an Ambassador, shouldn’t he have some way to contact the Secretary of State. It should be obvious to the most casual observer that something went horribly wrong, resulting in the deaths of our Ambassador and three other Americans. It would seem we should know why these urgent requests never made it up the chain. Oh, and maybe plug that hole as well.

It seems the old ‘I didn’t know about it’, excuse is getting overused in this administration.

Yeah she doesn’t need balls. As Betty White said, say she has a “p****” now those things take a pounding unlike balls which are sensitive haha

woodcutter's avatar

Pussies aren’t sensitive?

rooeytoo's avatar

I never saw a woman double over whining and moaning if they take a thump in that vicinity!

‘zactly.

You know, it is the Republicans who are trying their best to ‘tag’ Hillary Clinton as being responsible for the deaths in Benghazi – but it was the Republicans who voted to CUT the funding for the Security Forces for our Embassies. You might find this Link to be interesting

It makes one wonder if the Republicans think that no one remembers?

glacial's avatar

@Linda_Owl I’ve been wondering why no one has been mentioning this.

Linda_Owl's avatar

Well, @glacial , I’m thinking that the Republicans hope than no one remembers.

ETpro's avatar

@Linda_Owl & @glacial Every time I think Republicans must have finally hit the duplicability bottom, they prove me wrong by stooping even lower.

“Still, then-Deputy Assistant Secretary for Diplomatic Security Charlene Lamb testified in October that the size of the attack—and not the money—was the issue.”

Asked if there was any budget consideration that led her not to increase the security force, she said: “No.”

Since Hilary claims she knew nothing about the request nor made any decisions about the security, It would seem the person that did, would have more insight. Another Red Herring.

ETpro's avatar

@Jaxk That may even pass your usual spin. All the Republican refusals for additional security funding mean nothing even though they are matters of record, but a Deputy Assistant Secretary for Diplomatic Security’s saying that money wasn’t an issue for her proves that Secretary Clinton wanted to ambassador killed, or some such nonsense. Red herring indeed, and it’s you Republicans serving it up.

Jaxk's avatar

@ETpro

Like Sargeant Schultz she says “I see nothing, I hear nothing, I know nothing” and then wants us to believe she knows. Only the most gullible amongst us would believe that.
