How do you view Fluther in your life?

Asked by WillWorkForChocolate (23163points) February 22nd, 2013

How does this place “feel” to you? Like a diary that you pour your heart out to? Like a pet that you play with when you feel like it? Like a friend who’s always there for you? Like a three ring circus, maybe? :D

Most of the time, to me, Fluther feels like a bar where the patrons are incredibly inquisitive.

I view it on a computer screen, mostly. Sometimes on my Android device.

woodcutter's avatar

Its something to do when I have done everything that has to be done. Sometimes there isn’t anything here that keeps me interested and sometimes there is. It is entertainment mainly.

KNOWITALL's avatar

I think of fluther like a friend who is not in my area.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

It feels like an over grown version of Cheers. We have the regulars and then someone new walks in from time to time.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe Ha, I totally agree with you, Sammy!

Ooooh, look! Norm is about to post next. NORM!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate It’s a dog eat dog world and I’m wearing milkbone underwear.

ucme's avatar

An oppurtunity to have a laugh & giggle with some like-minded yanks, I don’t come across many in real life see, ooh…sticky!
@WillWorkForChocolate Hi Diane, wanna hump?

zensky's avatar

Hi. I’m Zen and I’m a Fluther addict.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@ucme Maybe… Do I get a beer first, big boy?

ucme's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate Only if you promise to be rough, Norm is carrying a bit of timber though, fortunately, all my wood is in my pants ;-}

Mama_Cakes's avatar

A distraction. Good for when I’m bored or need a break from school work.

SamandMax's avatar

Rent a room dammit

thorninmud's avatar

An online interactive museum of people. I can sit here at my desk and explore all of you fascinating works of human art.

ucme's avatar

No need to rent, when you can buy…peasant!

deni's avatar

Something to do mostly, that I enjoy, but also somewhere I can find answers to unique questions that aren’t anywhere else on the web.

MilkyWay's avatar

To me it feels like my safe haven, with people who I can be myself around.

Coloma's avatar

^^^ Yes and having friends that aren’t really friends but are friends.
A place to play, learn, babble on, find laughs.
Sadly, right now, I have been contemplating sharing some seriously devastating stuff I have going on, but I don’t want to mar my standing by sharing the dark side of Colomas, normally, eternally cheerful spirits.

SamandMax's avatar

The irony here is I’m a landlord. Lol

Aster's avatar

A place to hopefully help me out and where I can try and help others out with their questions. It is not a big part of my life like Facebook where I get 100 Happy Birthdays each year ! LOL
Pathetic , huh?

The meaning of Fluther waxes and wanes for me depending on how much is going on and how well it is going in my RL. I certainly view it as a friendly, stimulating place to hang out and having it has helped me through some lonely times. But I prefer sitting around the kitchen table with real live people the most at this point.

burntbonez's avatar

The meaning of fluther? You have to pay me to answer that!

Sunny2's avatar

Another reason to procrastinate. I often learn something, occasionally have something to say that may be helpful, get a laugh now and then, forget the things that are bothering me at the moment for a few minutes. It’s comfortable and friendly. I like the comparison with Cheers.

I see it as a very nice cafe with extremely interesting people, many of whom are extremely intelligent. Sometimes, liquor is served and a party mood exists. There’s always someone with a little doobie. And sometimes it becomes a regular bawdy house, with both sexes available gently observed by a woman, a madame, dressed in a little black and white French maid’s costume with very high hemline barely covering the most exquisite derriere supported high and mighty by 6 inch heels in black fishnet over legs that go on forever, and the lowest cut bustline revealing a cleavage of two of god’s finest creations. She has an angelic face that reveals nothing and a french curl of the finest blond hair. She caries a riding crop which she playfully wags at various transgressors now and then. I know her as Madame Le Moderateur. You know her as Augustlan.

Jeruba's avatar

Sometimes it’s a playground. Sometimes it’s a means to an end (real help with a serious question). Sometimes it’s mental and psychological exercise (trying to write a good answer myself) or a heartfelt exchange of experience and empathy. Sometimes it’s just an open house full of sociable chatter, some of it meaningful and some of it goofy, with lavish but noncaloric refreshments and the usual quota of intoxicated guests.

Sometimes it’s a vacant lot of weeds, dirt, rocks, and thorns, maybe even with lurking vermin or a snarling stray. That isn’t the case too often, but when it is, I leave for a while.

flutherother's avatar

As others have said it’s like a bar I can pop into and see familiar faces and hear some interesting chat.

blueiiznh's avatar

Some days in my rear view mirror.
Some days right on my windshield.
Other days, the wipers are on.

wundayatta's avatar

Brain and finger exercise. I get to think about and research things. I get to make fun of things. I get to tick some people off. I get to be parts of myself that normally don’t get to see the light of day. But I also don’t show parts of myself that are not appropriate for the virtual world. It’s fun and educational.

AshlynM's avatar

I see it as a place to go to to get information or advice.

marinelife's avatar

Weirdly, I see it as a community that I am a part of. It fills many needs in my life.

BBawlight's avatar

I think of it as a little town where everyone knows everyone else and they get along great most of the time. It’s residents are friendly and help you figure out your problems. Some people just pass through and move on to other places while others hang around for a while and get cozy. It makes me feel like I’m cared for and that there will always be someone here who knows me and can relate to my problems.
Fluther is like a second family to me.

Adagio's avatar

@Coloma If you didn’t have a dark side you’d be less than human.

Coloma's avatar

@Adagio Welll…not really my dark side, more like the dark side of life. haha

Paradox25's avatar

I post and sometimes blog on a handful of other sites. Sometimes a more variable userbase is breath of fresh air. I like fluther, but I like a few other sites as well. I don’t consider fluther to be a major part of my life though, just something that I devote about one to two hours a week to.

Mariah's avatar

Fluther is like a friend I rely on to be the opposite of a fair weather friend. I disappear for long stretches when everything is good, but when the shit hits the fan you can expect me to come crying for help. I sure do appreciate it. :)

Shippy's avatar

I find it interesting the questions, the way people interact that sort of thing. I don’t see it as a friend as such. I do see it useful to throw around ideas if I am trying to problem solve.

Unbroken's avatar

Love the question and the responses!

It was a pleasure to read this.

Fluther came at a time for me when I felt under stimulated, slightly depressed by circumstances I don’t have the power to change. It was wonderful to be able to redirect my thoughts to questions and answers. To see interactions of people. To have narratives to piece together and discover new things and ideas. The people here are as a whole friendly polite and welcoming and human.

It has been a joy to engage.

There are times I need breaks, and sometimes those breaks don’t last as long as I think they will. There are times when I have unhealthy let it aid in procrastination. It can also be wearying and feel slumpish. But I always have the option of disengaging.

As of yet I barely have met or interacted with a few. But I am in no rush. It will happen or it won’t. But those experiences were positive ones so I will continue.

jonsblond's avatar

It feels like Direct TV to me. Some days it’s like watching the Science Channel or History Channel. Other days it’s the Food Network or Animal Planet. The days I want to shut it off is when it’s like MSNBC or MTV (16 and Pregnant or Jersey Shore).

You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and…

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

…there you have the facts of life.

downtide's avatar

I view it as a favourite, friendly coffee-shop or bar, where I can go to relax and chat and have interesting discussions.

zensky's avatar

Years ago when this was asked we’d all say Hi Zensky. We love you. FA – Fluthers Anonymous.

Dutchess_III's avatar

The safest place on the internet for me.

bookish1's avatar

I guess I agree with the “Cheers” idea. In real life, my favorite places to hang out feel like that. Bars or cafés with a solid group of regulars, where people are still open to making new friends.

I especially appreciated Fluther when I first joined last summer. I had too much free time and was very lonely, and Fluther was a very useful outlet and source of support for me. Now, I’m so busy I almost don’t know how to get all my work done, but the loneliness still makes itself felt, and I am grateful to have this place to hang out when I don’t have the time to leave the house.

I also very much appreciate having a place where I can be anonymous and say things that I can’t say anywhere else.

@Espiritus_Corvus: Dang, I just read your post. Awesome ;) But I think Auggie should be La Modératrice if we are going to stick with the French theme.

Espiritus_Corvus's avatar

@bookish1: Thank you. My French is non-existent. French is nice enough on the ears to want to learn, but I mean really, if the French aren’t going to actually use their consonants, why don’t they just sell them to the Germans? And the Slavs could always use more consonants, that’s for sure. I hear they’re going to run out in like 2026 or something. Maybe swap the Serbs for some of those vowels they’re not using. Like the Dutch evidently did. ~

SamandMax's avatar

Cheers without Frasier…Hmmm….not working for me.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

We could find someone to be Frasier, but he wouldn’t be the same Frasier, unless we found a Lilith for him.

SamandMax's avatar

How do I view Fluther. Hmmm..

With my spectacles.

please note, SPECtacles, not TESTicles

wundayatta's avatar

SPEC is the first four letters of speculum.

just saying.

wundayatta's avatar

Watch out there WWFC, I put a sharp object in your hand!

Ow! That’s gotta hurt. You were supposed to look at that…. but not so closely.

ucme's avatar

WFFC…changed her name then? Will Fuck For Chocolate¿¿

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@wundayatta I was only using the object to insert my new bionic eyes, with which I intend to laser-zap you.

@ucme Sooo… do you have any chocolate, big boy?

wundayatta's avatar

Well, BCW (Bionic Chocolate Worker), it couldn’t happen to a nicer person. Congrats on the eyes. I trust you’ll be able to see clearly now.

ucme's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate Chocolate salty balls anyone?

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

Isaac Hayes, is that you? Sing to me, baby!

ucme's avatar

Hee.hee, he edited the error out, now folks will have no clue what we’re on about…how fun!

Arewethereyet's avatar

I’m the one who just walked in? I feel I already know some of you, I like what I see and that’s why I walked in!

Dutchess_III's avatar

Be careful @Arewethereyet….you might see MORE of them than you planned on! Stay away from pancakes. And welcome to Fluther! :)

Jeruba's avatar

Stay away from pancakes?? But…but…why? <sad and dismayed>

Stay away from frizzers, maybe. That’s good advice.

zensky's avatar

* SIGH *

Arewethereyet's avatar

Confused now… What’s with the pancakes?

Jeruba's avatar

Ahhh—just waiting for you to ask.

Here. And here.

Arewethereyet's avatar

Ok so I had a look at here and here and understand. I’m safe for now, I’m on a diet! No ‘P….....’ for me!

Arewethereyet's avatar

I have just read the frizzer thread, I’m lying on the floor snot screaming, it’s the funniest thing I’ve seen in years. Made my day, now I just have to sort out how I’m going to clean up my face so I can go out. Ice packs from the frizzed I guess?

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

Sure, they’re next to the babby when it’s purple.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Because people get all nekkid here when they have pancakes!
That Frizzer question is a Fluther classic!

Dutchess_III's avatar

O Lord!! I re-read the Frizzer thread! If I’m ever depressed I know right where to go for the cure!

Babby’s not purple. But the shell is.

Arewethereyet's avatar

Yeah Shell be right mate! Sad it got closed.

Arewethereyet's avatar

@Jeruba thanks for directing me to those meme links its sostewart to know this is not too serious
