Would sand be considered a type of geological sample?

Yep.

30 years later I still remember my Soil Mechanics Final. Each of us was given a number that corresponded with sample on the front desk. We were supposed to examine it analyze it and then write as much as we could regarding the behaviours, properties and possible uses of our sample. I got sand.

And a “C”.
