How much do you know about SEO (Search Engine Optimization)?

Asked by gambitking (4206points) March 15th, 2013

This is mostly geared toward business owners who market themselves on the web (or would like to). Also for the typical internet savvy layperson. I’m trying to get an idea of what common practice SEO tips and techniques are floating around out there. What do you know about SEO, what is your most advanced knowledge of it?

SEO = Search engine optimization?

Quite a bit. I have dealt with companies that do SEO marketing and optimization. I have searched lists of keywords while writing copy.

Not much, but I asked a similar question a couple of months ago. Some suggested this short Google piece. It links to other stuff of reference, and it’s good for a total beginner (like me!) Beyond that, I’ve just poked around the net to pick up bits-and-pieces.
One of those things I’ve put on the back-burner, so if you learn of anything cool or simplistic, by all means, let me know!

I used GoDaddy to create our website and it has a SEO component that will help you get your site on the first or second page for certain keywords, but if you want to be number one or number two (i.e. at the top of the list), it requires a lot more work. I used a book called Search Engine Optimization by Grappone and Couzin. It’s about 400 pages, but I got to first and second position on Google after using about half the book. This was about a year ago, so it’s not outdated information. I couldn’t find reliable info on the web – most of it was BS from people who don’t know what they are talking about, so I gave up and shilled out some cash for an old-fashioned book and it worked great for me.

We eventually upgraded from the website I created, but we still use GoDaddy to host because they have great customer support for people that are not professional internet type people. It’s important that your webpage be created in a way that is SEO or search engine friendly, so make sure you get a good webpage creator or use a reliable site if you are building a site using a template. Once you have that, it’s up to you to create the keywords, edit content, etc. so that you rank well with the search engines.

Well, SEO has changed a lot in the last 3 years. In my opinion, anything about SEO is compromised. Everything that has been stated here about SEO is accurate. One thing is for sure, SEO is trying to be more human.
