What should I do when I'm feeling down in the dumps?

Asked by tamkli3 (275points) March 25th, 2013

I’m a college student, no suprise there with feeling like poop already, but I’ve been feeling like crap lately, and I can’t seem to get myself out of my own funk. I try to go be active and walk around or what not, but then I lose the motivation and I seem to be in a constant state of autopilot. I go to class, work, eat sleep, see my boyfriend once a week barely (I go to school an hour away and I come back home every weekend). And for some reason, I have lost a lot of friends within the last couple of years of being here at school.

What helps get you out of your own funks?

What gets me out of a funk is watching the original The Producers. Very funny. Also’ Ruthless People.

Well…..just be glad you are not a one eyed little goose who lost her eye to a fish hook. with a badly healed broken leg and a heart murmur, like my little darling in my avatar who is still trusting evil humans to give her her daily corn. :-)

Quit going home on weekends and get to know some people around school. your boy friend can come visit you. Try to get some rest during the weekend to recharge your batteries.

And get a physical from a doctor at the health center. Just to be sure you are healthy and nothing is wrong.

Besides a medical checkup, which @zenvelo wisely suggests, try not to dwell on negative stuff and focus on all the things you should feel grateful for: your health, the friends you’ve kept up with, the good times you’ve had and will have again, and the fact that you’re in college and not sitting in a ditch in some war-torn country overseas. Also helps to take long walks and see a funny movie in a theater, not on TV.

Perhaps you should take the Mayo Clinic Depression Self Test to see if you might be clinically depressed. In which case you need help getting out of your funk. You can’t expect to do it alone.

If I am just in a blue mood, exercise helps, hot baths, cups of tea (jasmine is especially nice), talking with friends.

Depends. What kind of things make you happy in general? I’d write them down – in fact, I actually have written them down. My list includes
A) long-term goals (visiting Korea, going para-gliding)
B) things which will put me in a better mood immediately (like taking a bath, baking cookies, certain songs) and
C) some reminders on what I need to stay happy (not sleeping in, for example…making plans with friends…)
If I were you, I’d brainstorm for your ideas to put into these three categories. Write them down (here, or in real life), and go from there. Also, yes, see your doctor. Hope you feel better soon!

Understanding that in life there are ups and downs.
That it is Ok to feel like this for a time . It helps to schedule your down in the dumps to ..say one hour of complaints etc…then after that one hour you HAVE to do something exciting, fun, healthy, or anything to get your mind off of depressed feelings.
Realize what triggers these feelings, understand why?
Then do something…walk, read, volunteer to help others etc
Realize that there are millions of people in this world are sufferring and that you are just one of them..and that you are in a better position than most.( College).

I suggest you get more sleep. Be sure you are eating enough fruit and vegetables. The old saying “you are what you eat” turns out to be true.

A long hot shower works very well for me.
