How much should I charge for a personalized CV design service?

Asked by poisonedantidote (21675points) March 28th, 2013

Hi, I am just wondering if anyone can help me figure out a fair price to charge people for a CV design service that I want to provide.

There are literally 100’s of people looking for work in my area at the moment, and I thought maybe I could cash in by offering a CV (resume) design and printing service.

Seeing as I have a computer, a printer, and have completed a course on how to design a good CV, I thought it would be worth a shot. Specially as most people in my area don’t have computers, and if they do they don’t have a printer or don’t know how to make a CV that stands out from the others.

What I am offering in the package:

- 1 on 1 consultation for an hour. At a time and location of the clients choosing. (walking distance, no gas to factor in)

- CV design and creation. (an hours work)

- 100 CVs printed. ($5 ink and paper costs approx, plus 10 minutes printing time)

- Free advice pamphlet on how to present yourself and where to look for work.

There is no such other service on the island I live on, and the average pay in my area is around $5 to $6 an hour.

How much should I charge for this package/service?

BQ: If you did not have a computer, printer, or did not know how to make a CV, would you pay for the service?

Thanks!

For this country, I would charge around $120.00 for that. Adjust that accordingly to your island.

@marinelife Thanks. At the moment the price I was thinking was around $15 to $20, because people are stone broke, but I do think the service is worth more. Thanks.

(In the UK you can get it done for free at the employment office)

I was thinking $50 bucks before I read your response, so how about $35. Enough to make it worth your time.

In our area, that type of service would go for around $50 per hour, with the first consultation free.

@YARNLADY Thanks.

Yea, I’m thinking to make it about 25 euros, as we get paid about half what the average US wage is. I think the translation of $50 is 25 euros. Thanks for the input, the more the better.

@poisonedantidote : That’s a neat idea to make some money. And you could help people out.

I would definitely pay for this service if I didn’t have access to a computer or printer, or had no experience making CVs. I think in my area, such a service would cost a hell of a lot, because it’s an academic/industrial area, and there’s probably already a lot of competition. I would expect a similar service in this area to charge about $200 for professionals, and between $50—$100 for students.

I think Euros 25 might be a good compromise for your business. It factors in the ink/supplies, and two hours’ worth of work. And even though people make the equivalent of $5 or $6 per hour, they will look at a CV and job-hunting advice as a big and important investment.

Good luck!

I think it’s a great idea too. I think the price you suggested initially was much too low to make it worth your while though. 25 euros sounds like a good starting point. Perhaps half up front? You don’t want to do the work and then people don’t pick it up and you’re left out of pocket.

Good luck with it.

$50/ 25 Euros sounds good with half up front and the rest when they pick-up the CV.
Maybe another idea, offer them a ten percent rebate of they get you another client. Pay them when the other person completes the final payment.

Thanks to everyone who answered, it was helpful.

In the end, I am going with “prices start from 20 euros”, for a basic package that includes 20 CVs printed. Then there are optional extras, such as a high quality master-copy that photocopies well, extra copies printed, full color cover letter with face photo and so on, that can push the price up to 40 euros with all the extras.

Thanks for the help.
