Were these true statements on a talkshow regarding bedbugs?

Asked by Aster (20023points) May 14th, 2013

I watched a segment on bedbugs. The host said they are becoming common on beds all over the country and it doesn’t matter a bit the cost of the house, how neat and clean it is or the standard of living of the homeowners. That the Queen of Sheba could unwittingly drag bedbugs home in the seams of her Oscar de la Renta purse and they would get up and walk and hide in her mattress. Was he trying to be politically correct or are the Super Rich just as apt to have them as people in , say, homeless shelters.

The bastards have a 10 day breeding cycle, and have about a gagillion babies apiece, and they can do without eating for three months or more.

It only takes one, and they’re about frakking impossible to get rid of. You let someone couch surf for one night, and they bring you a gift that just keeps on giving, three new sofas later. * grumblegrumble *

Bed bug infestation is rarely due to lack of hygiene (or lack of wealth or social standing).

Also, they travel on people, since all they eat is people. So you can pick up bedbugs anywhere you share a space with other people: The city bus, a rental car, a seat at a movie theatre, a hotel room…

There was an article in the NY Times about a year ago, about apartment buildings of the mega-rich in NYC having bedbugs, and how fancy hotels in NYC have bedbugs, but of course do not want the publicity of it so they deal with it quietly. The mega-rich (we’re talking huge apartments with many bedrooms, many bathrooms, fireplaces, larger than many houses) have exterminators come in and deal with the bugs.

The bedbugs don’t know how rich how famous or how poor you are. They just know that they found a home with tasty hosts in it!

I’ve never had any experience of an infestation, but I know people who have, it sounds like a mix of Starship Troopers, Men in Black & A Bugs Life…some scary shit.

They were not exaggerating. Anyone can get bedbugs and they are on the rise recently.

This is similar to head lice. Infestations are quite democratic and don’t honor financial status. They’re just so easy to spread.
