What is it called when a person doesn't believe in any kind of god, doesn't have a religion..?

Asked by this_velvet_glove (1142points) May 19th, 2013

..and isn’t interested in finding one? (since I find that “god” thing ridiculous)

I know the term “atheist” but I don’t use it to describe myself, mostly because of a few “atheists” I’ve met, and nooo..
So, here’s what I say: I believe in myself, and in what I can do and get away with.
Also, I believe in the power of love, the power of music, and passion.
And in the people I love.

(I see the word “believe”, but no god there. How’s it called?)

I want a word that doesn’t have anything that means ‘god’ in it..

Humanist, rationalist, freethinker?

It is called atheism, even if you don’t like being associated with other people who consider themselves atheists. One distinction I like to make is that I’m not “anti-theist” which is that view that some people find so unsavory about many atheists.

It’s not atheism, because there are atheistic religions. The word you are looking for is simply “irreligious.” It won’t get everything you believe in there, but no single word can capture all the beliefs a person has unless they are incredibly simpleminded.

I agree with @Mariah, however, that it makes no sense to reject a term simply because you don’t like a few people to whom that term also applies. Leaving aside the fact that terms either apply or don’t, how do you expect to remove the negative association by surrendering the word to people you don’t like?

Humanism. Atheinostcism (Atheism + Agnosticism). Shintoism.

Hopefully in years to come, it will simply be regarded as ‘normal’.

SavoirFaire's avatar

@pcmonkey Shintoism is a religion, so it can hardly be the term for not having any religion.

It’s a good question, @this_velvet_glove, because so many people assume that anyone self identifying as an atheist is convinced beyond any shadow of doubt that no god/s exist. I don’t have a religion of believe in a god or gods because I see no evidence any god/s exist. But I find it just as preposterous to declare with no supporting evidence that the existence of a deity or deities has be disproven as to assert the opposite. In the strict meaning of the word I am truly an agnostic, but I am a member of Boston Atheists and not disturbed by the word theist cropping up in the moniker.

@SavoirFaire Yeah, I know it’s considered a religion, but at the same time the practice of Shintoism doesn’t have much [if anything] to do with gods. Sort of like Buddhism without the Buddha. Lots of appreciation for nature and human spirit..Well at least that’s what Ive been told.

I’m going to go with @Inspired_2write because that is what I consider myself to be. Don’t know, don’t need to know, still do the best I can to be a good person, don’t need religion to be a good person.

SavoirFaire's avatar

@pcmonkey Shintoism is not like Buddhism without the Buddha. Taoism is a little closer to that description, but Shinto (which means “way of the gods”) refers to an interrelated set of traditional practices concerning the worship of gods (kami) and the avoidance of ritual impurity.

@SavoirFaire Ah, I was very vague on my definition of Shintoism, but what I had UNDERSTOOD was that it was a way of life based upon nature and, as you said, avoidance of ritual impurity.. Thanks.
