Okaaay....so, what do you think I should do with this really cool jar that I paid too much for at a garage sale?

I kinda want to plant a self-sustaining eco system in it. But then I think, it would be cool to have a philodendron growing all inside and also out the top. But then, it wouldn’t be self sustaining.

So what would you do with it?

Fill it with money?

I don;t know if you smoke dope, but when I was in college we used a bottle like that to make a huge water pipe. Get a rubber stopper, a pyrex chem lab funnel, surgical tubing, and a mouth piece by using a bite valve from a hydration system. Put together with pipettes to reach the water.

It does use a lot of dope.

I like the patterns in the glass, I’d try to highlight those.

Have you seen those old-fashioned jars with little ‘stuff’ plastered all over them? Those are cool and worth a lot of money (if they’re old), so you could make one.

Make a terrarium! I want a terrarium SO BAD.

Use it as a doorstop, when is a door not a door? When it’s a-jar…neanderthal laugh

I have one just like it, I filled mine up with small change. Don’t want to try to lift it now.

Put sea glass in it. ;-)

Make wine.

Join a band with a banjo, a washboard, and a pooper scooper.

@Seek_Kolinahr Terrarium was what I was thinking
@ucme Ooooooo. :)
@KNOWITALL Do you have a pic of what you’re talking about? Yeah, like the pattern too. There were two of them. The other didn’t have a pattern.

@dxs Band….well, Rarebear plays a banjo, Auggie scoops a lot of poop around here so I need a wash board. Wait. Where does my jar come in?

@zenvelo Yeah. LOTS of creative pipes back in the day! :)

Ooh, I love that bottle! I like it so much I’d probably leave it empty, to be honest. But if I wanted to put something in it, a terrarium would be cool. Probably a huge pain in the ass to get all the necessary parts through that narrow opening, though.

Just dirt and plants.

I vote for terrarium , but I wonder if you could lay it on its side to plant and display. I am envisioning a wood rack type thingy to hold it in place.

augustlan's avatar

@Dutchess_III Yeah, but how do you get the plant…planted. If you see what I’m saying. It’s not like you can just drop it in and hope for the best.

@Beantowngal That sounds pretty. Kind of like a ship in a bottle deal.

Dutchess_III's avatar

With a philodendron, you can, actually. They’re mad little rooters. If it’s “self sustaining” it’ll rain and stuff, and the roots will grow. But to be self sustaining I’d have to seal it up….

That’s a good thought @Beantowngal. Good thought. Welcome to Fluther!

@Dutchess_III Saw it on Pickers on History Channel, it’s really cool, maybe you can look there since Google didn’t have the old ones.

augustlan's avatar

@Dutchess_III Good to know! Philodendron is just about the only plant I can manage to keep alive. :)

Dutchess_III's avatar

Those are the ONE plants I can not keep alive @augustlan!
I’ll see what I can find @KNOWITALL.

It’s really lovely as-is. I would just leave it alone and relegate it to tchotchke status.

Leave it as it is, or fill it with candy

Lovely find. Ship in a bottle comes to mind. If you want to get some of the cloudiness off, you could try vinegar and baking soda in water, Alka-seltzer tabs or a denture cleaner tablet.

“If IIIII could save ship in a bottle…..” I want something more interactive than that.
