Do you recall actors or movies where there is significant eye communication in them?

Asked by Unbroken (10746points) July 10th, 2013

I was watching The Big C and was taken with Laura Linney’s exceptional eye acting. Her significant glances were really beautiful.

I was trying to think of more movies that used or had this in them. I am drawing a blank.

Thought I would tap the knowledge of the collective.

Lucille Ball had fantastic eye acting. She had beautiful eyes that were very expressive.

The NBC show Community finds 80% of it’s humor in eye contact. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iHHAoHUs9c

All the great ones did, and the one who immediately popped into my head is Harpo Marx.

I was going to say Silent Bob in Dogma, but most of his acting in that role was with his shoulders, shrugging.

Kurt Russel in Soldier.

Check Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront.

During every operating room scene on Grey’s Anatomy, all we see are the actors’ eyes. They do a nice job with subtle blinks and eyebrow arching. (Of course, given the drama that seems to erupt during those scenes, I am relieved that they are not my surgeons.)

The scene that immediately springs to my mind is at the end of Bonnie and Clyde: that heart-stopping moment when the startled birds fly up, flushed by some sudden movement in the bushes. Bonnie shoots a look at Clyde, Clyde looks back and locks eyes with Bonnie, and you know—they know—this is it. A great moment for Faye Dunaway, a great moment for Warren Beatty, but it’s death for Bonnie and Clyde.

@gailcalled Resounding no to grey’s anatomy team working on me as well.

@Jeruba Beautiful, just what I think I am looking for.

@Brian1946 Haha.. not quite what I had in mind… but how very creative.

@ETpro I see some good oldies in my future.

@mrentropy I am ashamed to say I haven’t seen the soldier though I watch quite a few military movies.. I must fix that.

@CWOTUS I did like dogma, I don’t remember silent bob being in it. But he is the classic shrugger. Body language distillation to the minutae. lol

@Unbroken, you can find that final scene on YouTube. But if you haven’t seen the whole movie, watch it; don’t just look at the end without the buildup. I saw that movie when it came out in 1967—throbbing with the pulse of a generation. I saw it again when I took a film studies class at a junior college three years ago, with a room full of 18 and 19-year-olds. Man, it grabbed them too.

These are eyes worth watching and watching and watching.

The duel scene at the end of The Good The Bad & The Ugly, Eastwood/Van Cleef/Wallach at their finest, best movie scene ever…simples.
I always recall an acting masterclass with Michael Caine when it comes to “eye acting”, in which he advocates fixing the focus on just the one eye in close ups, the one furthest from camera is best, constant flicking from one eye to the other looks ridiculous & just plain distracting to the viewer.

Lots of incredible eye acting in “Glengarry Glen Ross,” in particular by Jack Lemmon and Al Pacino.

@Bellatrix I don’t compare :-)

It’s hardly a great movie, but I was watching Cowboys and Aliens the other day and I noticed a pretty cool non-verbal communication exchange between Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford that I found impressive.

Unbroken's avatar

Thanks @Jeruba I will watch the entire thing.

@HawaiiJake Romeo and Juliet. They do have sweet young eyes. I have watched several R&J in my time and don’t recall this one.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies Lol Cheech and chong! I did watch them once years ago. Maybe being stoned at the time damaged my memory.

@ucme That is a very memorable scene. I could watch that part of the movie over and over. Oh actually I have… Every now and then I will watch the whole thing there is eye contact in the whole the thing. Gotta love Clint Eastwood even when he was young.

@Pachyderm_In_The_Room Never heard of such a thing. Sounds silly. But I do like Al Pacino.

@syz I did see that movie. I remember thinking it was good but ultimately forgetable and I have indeed forgotten it. Maybe I will look it up again. Also good actors in their.

@Unbroken It’s a fantastic scene with no dialogue to spoil the tension, actions speak louder than words.

@Unbroken, you never heard of the play/film Glengarry Glen Ross??? If you love great dialogue and acting, you really ought to see it.

By the way, I do agree with you about Laura Linney. She’s a wonderful actress. Check her out in P.S.

Steve McQueen in Bullitt.

Yeah @Pachyderm_In_The_Room I have some severe holes in my education. I try to remedy them when I am aware of them though… so don’t loose faith in me yet. : )

Laura Linney is Radiant and Compelling. I think she is hot.. or was in that role. I have added P.S. to the list.

@Mr_Saturn512 I appreciate the response. I think I will put bullit further down my list.. Crime shows… I have absolutely seen to many… don’t we have any decent bad guys any more… was rewatching dune… fond memories about loving the cgi btw… now there is notable bad guy Baron Harkonan (Sic) love him!!! Though I wouldn’t mind a remake… hint hint hbo.
