How does one input donation write offs during tax season?

Asked by _Whitetigress (4378points) July 27th, 2013

I’ve never known the complete details of how a write off actually works. I’ve donated to the thrift shop a couple times, but never really knew what to do with the slip they gave me.

Also, when doing taxes, do online donations count? Can I insert that information too? For instance, if I fund a KickStarter project can I receive a tax write off?

Thanks so much jellies!

You can deduct up to a certain amount of your charitable contributions (currently equal to your percentage of tax due).

The way you do it is by itemizing your deductions.

Here’s the IRS Tips page A Kickstarter is not a tax deductible donation neither sending fifty dollars to your bookie. The person making the donation should receive a receipt with party that is a tax deductible unit, 501 ( c ) 3 are a tax deductible group. A political donation is not tax deductible. Here is Publication 526 (2012), Charitable Contributions .

If you itemize your deductions instead of taking the Standard Deduction then this is one of the deductions that you’d be itemizing.
