Sick of being fat but lack motivation to do anything about it?

Asked by Drush545 (229points) August 4th, 2013

I weigh a lot and I really need to lose weight for health reasons. I am also just tired of being heavy in general. I simply have no energy now that I have let myself reach this weight. Also, I have no will power when it comes to good unhealthy foods.

Thank you for sharing this with us. It shows that you are reaching out and want change, and change is hard.

Start by teaming up with a friend and write out a desired plan of action. Start small. Plan to replace one unhealthy snack per day with a healthy one.

Don’t try to change everything at once.

After perhaps a week or two of replacing the one healthy snack per day, change a meal. Gradually, add some physical activity to your plan.

Let your friend help you with the motivation. You’ve reached out to us. Could you reach out to someone in your every day life? You’ve made one step. Now, try two.

The first steps to change are just that. Taking a few steps. Don’t think of things like ‘I am going to work out to get fit’ or ‘I need to start running’ those are lofty goals. If you have done no exercise then even a gentle walk each day is a 100% improvement. Just get moving in ways that make you feel happy, even if you just sit on a swing all day. Love yourself now before you lose weight, the weight will start to fall off :)

Well, then, get comfortable with being fat.
It’s not all that complicated.
But it is impossible to, as they say, “have your cake and eat it too”.

Is your lack of energy and motivation because of your weight – or is it because you’re likely depressed and feeling generally lousy and lacking confidence that you can succeed? Because those are two different but valid reasons for feeling like you do.

It’s all about baby steps.
First you educate yourself on the nutritional and caloric value of all foods. THEN, you cut back even by just a couple hundred calories a day and THEN you start MOVING a little more. Park your car farther away from the store, walk around the block, research local hiking and bike trails and just GO out for a 10 minute walk or bike ride.

After a few weeks when you see the scale going down, even a pound or two, there is your motivation!
The law of physics, an object in motion STAYS in motion and an object at REST stays at rest!
Get your object in motion again!
Find a workout and diet buddy, even of you run an ad on Craigslist in “strictly platonic” and match up a few days a week to get together with a motivational buddy.

Positive results “feed” on themselves and once you start dropping the weight you are in competition with yourself. Seeing those numbers go down and feeling great is positive reward for your efforts.
You CAN allow yourself a cheat day or two, but once you are feeling better and losing you will not crave the crap you once did. You will eat that greasy burger and immediately feel sick and get the runs! lol

Just DO IT!
There is no magic moment here, it is hard work but hard work does pay off!

How heavy are you, actually?

I’m almost 300 and am getting weight loss surgery in the fall. It’s not easy. I had to work hard to qualify and will have to work hard afterwards too.

If you have no willpower or motivation, then you either need to find some or look into mental treatment to see what’s wrong with you. You will either need to get used to being fat or you’ll hit rock bottom and be forced to change.

I was also curious, like @seekingwolf was, how heavy you are.

I had weight loss surgery (the sleeve) and I highly recommend it. You have to be at least 100 lbs overweight or have a bunch of co-morbidities, such as high cholesterol, diabetes, etc. You need to see psychiatrist, cardiologist, pulmonologist and nutritionist in order to qualify. Think about it – it will change your life and within about 6 months you’ll lose the majority of the weight.

You know how eating one cookie (or some other food) simply increases your appetite for more cookies? Well, losing weight can be like this. Losing a few pounds can increase your appetite for more weight loss. Just like the sugar rush and flavor of the cookie, losing weight can make you feel better, and you’ll want more of it.

So, try losing some weight now – without the motivation. Do it anyway. It might be enough that it generates motivation for you.

I’ve always heard that eating half of what you normally eat helps. Everything in moderation.
If you normally eat 4 pieces of pizza, eat 2, etc.

Good luck!!

If you really want to lose the weight do little by little a day don’t stress your body to much. You can start walking 20 to 30 minutes a day and if possible start to run and work your way up. And drink lots of water instead of juice and sodas.
