When can two people in different places watch the moon together?

Asked by rfo1946 (7points) September 18th, 2013

I live in Little Rock Ar. My gal is in Fresno Ca. When is the next feasible time, weather permitting, for us to connect by gazing at the moon together while on the phone? I’ll be visiting her Oct 11th thru the 21st of next month.

Use Google by typing in phases of the moon. That should work.

As long as it is dark in both of your locations, you can see the moon together. There is a 3 hour difference between the two of you. That gives plenty of overlapping time of darkness.

Welcome to Fluther.

The correct response is: When she sees moonrise (whenever that is for California), then you can gaze at the moon together (while you’re in Arkansas) until the moon sets for you. This being the week of a full moon, it should be a great time for both of you.

Since the moon can be visible in the daytime as well as the night time, this still applies regardless of the position of the sun.

Welcome to Fluther This one is easy since you both are close enough so we can ignore latitude and moon orbital motion . You are at longitude W 93 deg. She is at long. W 120 deg.. The Earth turns at 360 deg in 24 hours or 15 deg per hour. You two are 120 -93 = 27 degrees apart. Call it 30 degrees for easy math. At 15 degrees per hour she will see the moon rise 2 hours after you. So, 2 hours after your moon rise she will just be seeing it on the horizon. When the moon is directly south from you, if she extends her arm and makes a fist it will be about 3 of her fist widths to the east of directly south.
The two of you can gaze at the same moon for about 8 hours per night. Just remember to wait at least 2 hours after moon rise. then she will see moon rise.
Enjoy. Very romantic.

Look up EME to see how techie guys use the moon.

It’s fun talking to someone close to the equator watching the tilted half moon.

Hey @rfo1946 Do it tonight!!!. In about one hour from now you will see a magnificent moon rise. It is almost full moon . If you look at 1 am and she looks at 11PM her time the moon will be high in the sky to the south and nearly full. Very romantic.

Good luck.
