How to speed up downloads?

I am renting a 1 MB per second line and my downloads is very slow, some downloads takes days even weeks.
Is there any software I can use to speed up my downloads?

Most likely the Torrents tag is your problem.

What does http://www.speedtest.net/ say? There is a big difference between MB and Mb.

Yes, a Megabyte is 8 Megabits.

Also note that downloads are restricted by the slowest link in the chain. You can have the fastest connection in the world but if the server you are accessing is slow, or there is a relay station with a slow connection, your speed will suffer.
