What's the deal with Opera and width?

Asked by bluemukaki (4332points) June 25th, 2008

I’m trying to get a set of DIVs which have an image and then a link below them to appear like they do here. It works in Firefox, Safari, IE and Flock, but in Opera every icon appears with a horizontal scroll bar, unless I select ‘Fit to Width’ from the View menu. It looks fine in every browser except Opera, any ideas why/potential fixes for the problem? The overflow: hidden tag removes the scroll bars, so I’m thinking it must be something to do with the way Opera is dealing with the width of my DIVs…

Have you set the padding and margin for both the divs and the images? And why don’t you just use overflow: hidden? Or perhaps overflow: visible?

Forgot to mention that, when I use Overflow:hidden that the text link on each icon isn’t displayed…and if I use overflow: visible, the text link appears off to the right of the icon, as if the text is on the same line as the image…

I don’t know if Opera has extra padding or margins by default. Have you tried using a reset css like the one from Yahoo UI?

It’s made things for me a bit easier.

Ah, so then it’s maybe a problem with the size of the text. It would be very useful if you could post an online demo so I could mess around with it a bit and perhaps brew up a solution.

@astrofoo – I don’t think inserting a reset style at this point would be a wise discussion. And I think I prefer Eric Meyer’s CSS reset ;-)

Did anyone assume this was a question about Oprah’s weight when they read the title?

delirium's avatar

yes, RH… I then saw it was opera and thought he was asking why opera singers tended to be ‘wide.’

@delirium: I’m super tired. :)

I thought this question was about fat ladies singing!

Damn, why can’t they just permanently delete an answer? Now I’m curious :P

I solved my problem in case you off-topic dudes were wondering…

Vincentt's avatar

Cool, would you mind sharing the solution?

Well it makes absolutely no sense to me, but I made the screenshot above each piece of text float:left; and now it works fine! Opera does some weird stuff because of all these extra View options you can have I think…

[Fluther Moderator:] I removed my own answer because it was totally off-topic and the question still hadn’t been answered. I should have known better! I’ve restored it now, anyway.
