Why are people so stereotypical these days?

Asked by Magical_Muggle (2265points) November 10th, 2013

There have been many stereotypical things around these days. I am curious to know what have you noticed, how did it make you feel? By the way, I am referring to human stereotypes, e.g. “Females must be skinny to be pretty”, etc.

We live in a democratic society. We tend to approach life as though everything must have the popular vote to succeed. It would follow, that people end up being clustered according to how they’ve been received by those who will cast their “vote.” If a photo of a 90 yr old man shows up, he’s painted purple, and wearing a cheesehead foam hat, his loveability and acceptability would be determined by people who love purple, people who love/hate the packers, etc. Once determined, everyone else painted purple will be judged according to the greatest response so far. People do seem to have forgotten how to take eack person/ocassion/object on their individual merits, or lack thereof.

I don’t believe in using the phase ‘these days’ as, generally, it doesn’t indicate anything, by itself. People have always used stereotypes, been racist and prejudiced, cared about being in an ‘in-group’ or not, whatever.
