How do the upper lockup solenoid and the shift solenoid control gear shifting in an automatic transmission?

Asked by 2davidc8 (10189points) August 26th, 2014

My mechanic says that my car needs to have these replaced. I’d like to know what is the function of these solenoids and how do they work to control shifting in an automatic transmission?

They cause the shift valves in the control body to be inoperative.
