Can anyone recommend good new music?

Asked by keobooks (14322points) January 27th, 2015

When I was a kid, I asked my grandfather what he thought about music. He said he hated that new rock and roll music—especially the Beatles. He said this in the late 1980’s. After further probing, I found out his opinions about what was good music ended somewhere around 1957. I told myself that I’d NEVER let my music tastes get stale and I’d try to listen to new stuff. I didn’t want to sound like an old curmudgeon.

So anyway, I was thinking about all my favorite music, and I realized that with only an exception or two, my opinions about good music died somewhere around 1994. That was over 20 years ago. I’m only a few years away from turning into my grandfather.

I have fairly eclectic tastes, so I should be somewhat easy to please. I like a little bit of everything—just 20+ years ago everything.

Here are some musicians and bands I like off the top of my head.

Tom Waits
Leonard Cohen
Bob Dylan
Laurie Anderson
Amy Winehouse*
Richard Cheese*
Residents
Rugburns
Beastie Boys (shut UP! They do NOT suck!)
Pixies
Pizzicato Five
Graeme Ravell

* The starred ones are the only post 1994 stuff I can think of.

I had someone turn me on to Dick Cheese a bit ago. Nice. Right now I’m listening to Riding With the King. B.B. King and Eric Clapton. Very bluesy and nice. Then Johnny Lang, Wander This World. Not new but I like it.

I would also highly recommend that you play with the following site to find artists you may like based on artists you already like:

I would recommend Neil Young’s 2006 album, Prairie Wind, which is outstanding.

If you would like to expand your eclectic musical tastes (never a bad idea), then try out the new face of Celtic music with artists including:
Enya
Celtic Woman
Celtic Thunder.

If you have either Windows 8 or 8.1, then a good source for new artists and songs similar to what you already enjoy, IHeartRadio is a great—and free—resource.

The Decemberists just came out with a new album and will be touring this spring.

This is a new song

If you want new, off the radar stuff, try SoundCloud.com

Lots of independent artists post their stuff there. This is where I found RAC AND Digitalism.

Also, Pandora is great for happening upon new acts based on other artists you already like.

These may not be your cup of tea, but how about ..

Some Russian pop music:
Оля Полякова – Russian Style (a total ripoff of Gangnam Style, but very cute)
I have no idea who this is, and the tune is kind of simplistic, but my gosh is she cute, and the set is … interesting. Настя Каменских – Песня Красной Шапочки

Some Bollywood hits:
Nimbooda Nimbooda (with Aishwarya Rai; I don’t think she’s doing the vocals, but she does great visuals)
Umrao Jaan

And now for something completely different:
Rammstein – Ich Will (it fits certain moods)

Back to the lighter side:
I’m Blue (give it a minute or so before you decide against it)
Foster the People – Pumped Up Kicks (not exactly ‘the light side’, but it sounds that way)

This might be more in line with the artists you originally listed:
Iron and Wine – Flightless Bird, American Mouth
Sleeping at Last – Saturn

Well, now that you have me watching and listening to Aishwarya Rai videos again, I suppose that’s what I’ll be doing for most of the rest of the evening:

Salaam
Kajra Re

Worth watching just for the dance moves. I have no idea what they’re saying at all, but the dance is so expressive and beautiful that I could almost watch it without sound. For awhile, anyway.

First, I need to say that Richard Cheese is my king.

Now, for some of my favorite songs:

History and Puppy Love by This Wild Life (My all time favorite band)
Daylight and Amnesia by 5 Seconds of Summer (I feel no shame)
I Always Liked That by Maria Mena.

I’m just starting to listen to the music that has links to it. If anyone is interested, I’ll post my opinions. If you’re not interested, quit following the thread because I’ll post them anyway.

So far I just listened to @Cruiser ‘s links and I’ll have to say it was like he read my mind. PERFECT. And the third song—I never mentioned that I was a huge Parliament funkadelic fan, yet you somehow knew. So awesome. I never thought I’d like country music, btw. But it reminded me a lot of some of Bob Dylan’s best electric stuff from the early 70s.

keobooks's avatar

Actually, I am not going to post the rest. Almost everyone gave great stuff. Thanks so much.

BTW, this surprises me because when someone asks for a book suggestion, everyone just posts their favorite books instead of books actually related to the genre or styles of the authors they posted. I had assumed everyone would do this with music, but it seems almost everyone who posted actually took my tastes into account and picked stuff I’d like.
