Taking Sertraline and Abilify COLD TURKEY.

Asked by JAS08on (18points) March 7th, 2015

Hello, I’m Jason, and I have a question about taking Sertraline and Abilify for over 10 years. My question was, is it OK to stop taking Sertraline and Abilify cold turkey, BUT, now I know not to do that.
The only concern I have is that I already have stop taking BOTH Medications for 4 weeks. And I started to lose weight. I use to weigh 238 pounds, and now I weigh 190 pounds. I lost 48 pounds in a 8 to 10 week time period.
I told my Doctor that I stop taking it, but she said I can go back and start taking BOTH medications again. And that is what I am doing now, one in the morning, and one in the evening. BUT, my question is should I go back to a doctor and get checked to make sure there is no harm done to my organisms or anything?

This is a question for your doctor and not unqualified strangers on a web site. The rapid weight loss is a very good reason to see your MD and have her check you out. Good luck.

I echo @gailcalled‘s comment, and would add that it’s never wise to make any changes to your presciption regimen without consulting a doctor.

Stopping these meds cold turkey is generally ill advised. It took me months to taper off a smidgin of sertraline.

It sounds like you talked to your doctor. If you have any additional concerns call him. Won’t you have to call the office for a refill anyway?

If you’re concerned that there might be some kind of damage, what you can do is call up your doctor again and tell her you’d like to have some tests run to check on whatever organs might be effected by the medications. Keep in mind that it’s your life, your health, and you can have tests run whenever you want.

I don’t suggest unnecessary testing, but call your doctor and have a chat with her about your concerns. If she suggests that you don’t need tests, ask her kindly to explain why because you need to be put at ease. I’m sure she’ll understand, and good luck.
