What are you teaching yourself at the moment?

Asked by longgone (19541points) September 30th, 2015

And how’s it going?

I’m teaching myself to put down the toilet lid before flushing. Somewhat more glamorously, I am also teaching myself how to speak in front of (tiny) crowds.

Both projects are going quite well, but progress is slow.

What about you?

Not to be defensive when I don’t know something.

I’m teaching myself to live on a lot less money than I was accustomed prior to the recession capsizing my financial boat. I am actually doing well, not necessarily thrilled by my tight budget and frustrated at the pathetic state of my savings after being very solvent forever, but, one can live and adjust to a lot less if necessary. I do have several well paying jobs coming up in the next 6 weeks which will boost my savings but I miss my old life tremendously and the freedom that money buys. You can’t miss what you never had, but to have it and lose it is a hard thing to cope with.

No more travel, no more fun week end get aways, no more eating out, no more purchasing fun decorative art objects for my home, but….I still have a nice place to live, my pets, and I’ve adapted. Adapt or die ey? haha

How to work sheetrock mud like a pro. Installed corner bead for the first time, too.

Being patient at work, realizing that things are not in my control except my reaction to them, and that it isn’t personal, it is just bad management.

I am trying to teach myself how and where to apply pressure to relieve a headache.

GRE prep. It’s going well… but the exam is Monday morning and minor panic is setting in.

It’s not working! What am I doing wrong? What a doofus, I will just go sit in the corner for a while

@rojo try pressing your thumb and forefinger in the web between the thumb and the fore finger of the other hand. Pinch it. Pinch it good!
Then drink a Mountian Dew and eat a chocolate candy bar.

longgone's avatar

@janbb Yep, that’s on my list as well.

@Coloma This is why I am reluctant to become rich. Then again, my plan to buy Fluther kind of depends on that.

@Dutchess_III Very cool.

@ucme Can’t decide whether to laugh or cry.

@zenvelo ” [It] isn’t personal, it is just bad management.” I like that one!

@rojo If you find out, let me know!

@Cupcake GRE?

@josie My little sister likes to use the yoga pose to make me jealous.

@Dutchess_III You are evil. That hurt, and you know no-one will be able to resist trying!

ucme's avatar

@longgone You should teach yourself to be less indecisive.

Cruiser's avatar

I am studying up on my legal options since I fired my partner.

Coloma's avatar

@longgone I wasn’t “rich” but I also didn’t have to worry if something went down that cost a few thousand on the spur of the moment. Money buys freedom, the freedom to say ” take this job and shove it”, the freedom to take your time making choices, the freedom to know your bills are covered if you are out of work for awhile. The rest is all fun but the real joy of money is the time and freedom it buys you. Now I am back having to do a lot of things I would rather not all because of the need for more cash flow.

Your life sounds like mine, @Coloma. You know where the show the graph that says, “The plan:” and the graph is a smooth, upward curve. Then, “The reality:“and the line is a jumbled mess, all over the place.

Just downloaded a movie maker program. Gonna be spending some time learning it.

I study English grammar and writing on the internet—the drudgery required to become a better writer. I call it the mechanics of writing, versus the art. I consider both equally important. I am also re-learning Algebra because doing more advanced equations keeps the mind sharp as I live quite isolated from other people and find days of silence have a dulling effect.

Coloma's avatar

@Espiritus_Corvus Re-learning Algebra? That sinks it, I never pegged you as a masochist. Do you have a Volley Ball named ‘Wilson” too? Dude, I can just see you drawing our Algebra equations in the sand with a stick on some isolated island somewhere. lol
I think you need to take up carving a Ukulele out of a coconut or making a drum out of a turtle shell or something. haha

Write me, I’ll keep you amused. ;-)

I’m studying to be a yoga instructor. Haven’t been a student for a long time. Anatomy is tough. Wish I knew Latin.

When 2015 started, I tried to be less rash in my judgments of people. Along with that, I tried to make an effort to see things from the perspective of others. It’s taught me a lot about people, including myself.
I’m trying to re-learn ASL and that’s going great as well.

Here2_4's avatar

YOLO.
Not just what the letters stand for, but what it means. I keep living like I have forever.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I love algebra! It’s difficult to master, but once you do it’s like looking into a whole new world.

Espiritus_Corvus's avatar

@Dutchess_III Yes, it’s actually fun. It’s the kind of enjoyment one might get from crossword puzzles. Once you’ve embedded the rules, or properties, it’s like automatic writing. Very relaxing and rewarding. Logic on this level is infallable.

janbb's avatar

@Espiritus_Corvus @Dutchess_III I felt that way about geometry. Once you did the proof, you knew if you were right. It was so clean.

Dutchess_III's avatar

So clean, so infallible, so perfect.

When I got into geometry in college, it got to the point where everytime I looked at something, be it a tree, or a dog, whatever, I saw lines and planes. It was amazing.

Teaching myself to deal with anxiety at the moment.

Coloma's avatar

Today I am teaching myself how to function pretty much with one hand after burning my left hand the other night cooking. A pretty bad burn.
Oh man, I have gouged my raw burned knuckle several times and the pain is unbearable. Ripped off the scab and bleeding profusely too.

Owwww!

Sooo.. I have it wrapped and am wearing a glove to get through my daily chores here. PITA but better than having it maimed over and over again. haha
Of course it is my left hand and I am a lefty so makes things extra challenging.

dxs's avatar

Oh, I had to basically teach myself all of this computer science stuff because my professor considers installing VMs and importing OVA files as “basic computer literacy.”
(After 5 hours and with the help of some generous people at the computer lab, I’ve finally figured it out. Now time to start writing all those programs for the project I have due tonight…)

Dutchess_III's avatar

^^^^Oh shit!

When I was in college algebra I aced every single homework assignment. I knew the stuff. But when it came to tests, they were at the next level up, things we hadn’t learned yet. The dude expected us to figure it out for ourselves….on a TEST.
I was working for a 4.0 overall in college, and that class knocked me down to a 3.75. I was so angry. I took it to the dean, and he sided with me, said this wasn’t the first complaint about the guy he’d had.
Don’t know what happened to him.

I will now be teaching myself to shave with a straight razor. Just left from “the art of shaving” my face is smooth as baby’s bottom, and shiny.

tedibear's avatar

I bought “Geometry For Dummies” and am working through it slowly. Very slowly, as I am only on page 49. :P I’m married to an engineer who is good at explaining things, so I have help nearby if needed.

I plan to find something akin to a “Biology For Dummies” book as well. This is part of my plan to conquer these two failures of my sophomore year in high school.

After that, maybe I’ll work up the courage to try one more time to learn how to sew.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@majorrich
I used to shave with a straight razor in college, get a “good” stone and strop to keep it sharp!

Dutchess_III's avatar

Step slowly away from the sewing, @tedibear
