Why are the terms journalists, and good samaritan not going on the tag box?

Ok, this is just a guess on my part to hold you over until someone who actually knows fills you in but here goes:

“Journalist” is not allowed because of the low regard in which they are held in the US. This has come about by clever manipulation of the media by the 1%ers (and the originators of this site are a part of this elite grouping) in order to denigrate the profession and eliminate the possibility of someone pointing out what complete and total asses they are. Try using the term “Drive By Media” or “Liberally Biased Reporters”. That may do the trick.

As for “Good Samaritan”, well, that has to do with the anti religious bias that permeates the Fluther world. Try substituting Evil Satan Incarnate, that should still work.

Hope this helps, at least for a while.

Because Fluther topics only work when everybody uses the same terms. For example, imagine I was a newbie interested in discussions on kids. I would, on joining Fluther, follow the topic “children”. It would not occur to me to also follow, “brats”, “offspring”, “tykes” and “younglings”, so questions tagged with these terms would never reach me.

It makes sense to use the most simple terms you can think of, as well as the most widely known. In your case, Fluther should have suggested, “journalism” upon your entering the first few letters of the word. Instead of “Good Samaritan”, a more broad term such as “ethics” would alert the people who might be interested in the thread.

When you use topics Fluther does not know, that means you are creating new ones. In most cases, it makes more sense to look for a synonym the site – and, consequently, the fellow jelly interested in your thread – already knows.

I added journalist and samaritan for you.

@rojo interesting.
@longgone I don’t mean what’s the best way to get as many answers as possible. I mean among all the tag words I typed in, those are the 2 words that refused to show up. It’s like I never typed those words at all.
@JLeslie How?

JLeslie's avatar

I’m a Topics Editor. I tried those two to see if they were in the system and they were.

flo's avatar

Interesting. I’ve never had this happen before. They’re are regular terms, not obscure or anything.

flo's avatar

@JLeslie So, why did it not work when I try to do it?

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

@flo, @JLeslie is a topic editor for the site. So she has powers that we don’t.

msh's avatar

Seems to be a lot of jobs and noms de plume going around.
Does that constitute self- nepotism?

@msh, it takes a lot of volunteers to keep a site like Fluther functioning. To my knowledge @JLeslie has voluntarily edited and tidied up the topic information for a very long time. We all tend to put different terms for the same things. I don’t think there’s anything preventing anyone volunteering to take on such roles. Whether or not there is a need now the site and its membership is so reduced is another thing.

msh's avatar

I was not referring to Anyone in particular. But thank you. I appreciate it.

JLeslie's avatar

@flo You didn’t try it. I tried different words than you did. I think I left off an s on journalists and used samaritan alone. Interestingly, we are supposed to use the plural of words whenever possible. Why journalist worked and not journalists is beyond me.

I don’t have the power to add words that the system rejects. I can remove topics I feel are inappropriate, or add topics if the OP didn’t write in enough. We like to see at least 4 topics. I just used trial and error to see what I could add for you.

Interestingly, another topic editor had already looked at your Q, but it was before you wrote this Q about caring so much about those topics not appearing.

We don’t edit topics very much (I don’t anyway). There aren’t many of us with the access as far as I know.

flo's avatar

@Earthbound_Misfit I understand. By the way how did you know @JLeslie has beeen the topic’s editor? I’m just curiuous if it’s somewhere visible to all of us and I’m missing it.
@JLeslie Got it.

JLeslie's avatar

I don’t know if it says somewhere who is a topic editor. I think there is some part of the site you can see who is a mod, maybe it says topic editors too?

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

I used to be a mid @flo. That’s why I was aware of @JLeslie‘s role.

ibstubro's avatar

I didn’t know there were such a thing as ‘topics editor’.

I thought the topics were static, like the rest of the site development.

JLeslie's avatar

We didn’t always have topics editors I don’t think.

The topics help the search engines so people come to fluther. Some jellies don’t tag/topic much, and so a good Q could get missed in a search. We can go in and add topics to improve that. Some Q’s have garbage topics tagged to it, so we delete them. Other rules, like usually we want words written in the plural, that can be fixed too.

ibstubro's avatar

There are some annoying misspellings among the topics, @JLeslie. If we report those to you, can you correct the topics pool?

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

Mid was mod. Dratted phone.

ibstubro's avatar

I almost razzed you about that, @Earthbound_Misfit.

JLeslie's avatar

@ibstubro If you send me the link to the Q I can fix that Q. I can’t fix that Fluther allows the misspelling.

ibstubro's avatar

Oh, okay, thanks, @JLeslie.
Allowing the misspelling it what annoys the pee out of me.
Modding for spelling in details, and having misspelled topics available.

longgone's avatar

^ When we see incorrectly spelled tags, we edit those. We can disable them to ensure the same mistake is not repeated. So, flags on tags containing typos are very welcome!

ibstubro's avatar

Okay, @longgone, thanks.
I don’t mean to be a nag. I just don’t want to cause a snag by leaving you holding the bag when I flag the tags that lag?

longgone's avatar

^ Um…Red fish, blue fish?

ibstubro's avatar

< Self entertaining. I make my own pun. Ignore ignorant issuances if inclined.

flo's avatar

Didn’t Fluther introduce auto correct for spelling a few months ago?

longgone's avatar

@flo Nope, though that would be very cool!

I see I never responded to your previous post, sorry:

In my first comment on this thread, I explained which tags do not work for Fluther. I should have added that these are also the tags which will usually not show up. That is either because they are removed by a mod or topic editor, or because they have been disabled. Tags which are spelled incorrectly may be disabled, as well as joke tags or ones which just do not make sense in this context.

@ibstubro Self-entertaining is a virtue, for sure!
