What is your opinion of Pope Francis?

Asked by NerdyKeith (5489points) March 17th, 2016

Its been interesting observing the ever evolving opinions of Pope Francis shift direction over the years. I remember when he first became pope, with everyone claiming that he was the refreshing change the Catholic Church needed.

He’s been quite the controversial figure since then, causing quite a stir in the media. From his opposing views to marriage equality, his transphobic attitudes, refusing to meet with a French diplomat on the bases of his sexuality, his opposing views on same sex parenting, supporting anti-gay marriage clerk Kim Davis, and his view that opposing the marriage equality laws in the United States is a human right.

I like him. I feel he speaks to me. I’m Jewish and an atheist. I feel he is a peaceful man and a uniter.

I think he is a genuinely devout and humble man who care for others of all faiths and walks of life, all people.

Like a lot of politicians – especially those who have never held paying jobs, started or managed a business – he seems like a well-meaning idiot, dangerous only when listened to.

I think he’s the best thing to happen to the Church since John XXIII.

He is one of the few Popes living to the ideals of St Francis and Jesus. Other than John XXIII, we haven’t had one of those in a long time.

He’s the one Pope in my lifetime that exemplifies adherence to the teachings and beliefs of Jesus, and believe me, when it comes to the Catholic Church that’s beyond an exemplary feat. It’s a virtual MIRACLE!

I think it’s refreshing to have such a forward thinking Pope.

I think he gets more credit than he’s worth when held up against his predecessors.

He’s still the head of the largest organized crime ring in the world, still refuses to bring kiddie-fiddling priests to justice, and remains homophobic and transphobic. He remains opposed to ordaining females as priests, and still refuses to rescind Humanae Vitae.

Nobody & I mean nobody beats John Paul II, he was daddy cool.

I still think he’s the refreshing change the Catholic Church needed.

He seems to be a man that lives his faith.
I don’t view him as controversial. He’s the leader of the Catholic Church, and as such maintains the tenets of the Catholic faith.

The media like to generate controversy around that, when, in fact, it’s nothing new. Pope Francis seems to be very adverse to openly alienating people if he can help it, which I find admirable in the leader of Christian faith.

Contrast that with the Mormon Church’s New Policy on Gay Couples and Their Children.

IMO if you alienate people from the Church, you’ve lost them forever. Francis seems determined to leave every avenue possible open to people entering, or staying in, the church.

he didn’t support Kim Davis. some guy from his team slipped her in there and has been fired for it since.

NerdyKeith's avatar

@Jak He still went along with it at the time. It was also a “secret meeting” or at least it was supposed to be. For all we know Francis could be shifting the blame.

I like him. I hope he can preach some tolerance and kindness into those judgmental Catholics. (I wonder if it ever confuses them when God’s right hand man, the dude that God really talks to, can suddenly say that something that’s been a mortal sin since the church began is suddenly OK? it’s all from God isn’t it? Does god change his mind?)

@nerdykeith I think the Pope has a lot more going on than worrying about who to blame for the Kim Davis fiasco. He has people for that.

The Vatican ambassador responsible for the Kim Davis visit has been fired.

ragingloli's avatar

He is the leader of a transnational criminal organisation.

Jak's avatar

@nerdykeith. He did not go along with anything, or even know there was anything to go along with. She was just part of the line of people who got to shake his hand. He had no idea who she was, nor was he aware of the hooha that made such a stink here.

Pope Francis, has admitted that in his view even those in government jobs have the right to object to their duties

When asked about government officials objecting to the law, he said:

“Yes, I can say that conscientious objection is a right that is a part of every human right. It is a right,”

“... and if a government official is a human person, he has that right. It is a human right.”

Feel free to check out this article titled What The Pope Really Said About Kim Davis

This whole thing of the ambassador being fired, seems like noting more than damage control. This seems to happen a lot with the Vatican and the pope. Which is why so much of what he says to the press lacks consistency. He’s just not a very honest man at all. I do not trust him.

It is sort of like shitting blood. You had a solid movement and that is great. But there is blood in the bowl and that is pretty horrible.

Better than just streaming pure blood out or your asshole I suppose.
