Will you help me put my money where my mouth is?

Asked by trolltoll (2570points) June 1st, 2016

Yes, I do give a damn about critically endangered gorillas. This whole fracas about self-righteous outrage, Harambe, and irresponsible zoo-mom has inspired me, and I would like to make a donation to an environmental conservation group – specifically one that is known for helping gorillas. Can you help me choose the best organization to donate to?

If you have donated to environmentalist groups in the past, please recommend one to me!

Jane Goodall seems as good as any. It is ape-specific.

(Goodall is also on record as saying Harambe would likely not have hurt the child, based on the behaviour she saw in the videos)

@Seek thank you! I didn’t even think of her.

I second the Jane Goodall Institute.

The Charity Navigator is a decent source for determining how transparent and efficient an organization is, including administrative expenses, etc.

There is also the Doane Fossey Gorilla Fund International. If you’re unaware of her, she was actively involved in efforts to stop poaching and was murdered by poachers.

This group also has a favorable rating on Charity Navigator.

BTW: If they were going to shoot the gorilla, why couldn’t they have shot him with a fast acting tranquilizer rather than killing him outright?

trolltoll's avatar

The reason given was that tranquilizers could not bring down the gorilla fast enough, and would probably just have aggravated the animal, causing it to act more aggressively.

^ Informed and sane response.

Many (not all) of Fluther thank you.

Looking into a decent alligator protection group that you can donate to.

Fuck the alligators. They’re all over the place, breed like crazy, and there are fucking millions of them.

Might look into starting a Go fund me for Disney to get some warning signs saying something to the effect of “hey, I know we advertise this resort with people in bathing suits wading in this water, but it’s full of carnivorous reptiles and poisonous snakes, so if you’re not terribly familiar with Florida wildlife you might want to pick a different resort”
