In nations that are starving or gripped with rabid famine what do they use for comfort when they don’t have food to use as in the US?

Catching episode of some show I never knew was on TV called ”My 600lb Life” or something like that, surrounding people over 600lb trying to lose weight so they can get weight loss surgery to lose more weight. There seemed to be a theme with some (not all) that they ate themselves to 600lb plus because food made them happy or was a comfort when they were stressed, etc. The show to me seemed to make it seem that is natural for people to do as a reason for their obesity. However, I got to pondering, what do people steeped in poverty and hunger do for their stress and unhappiness when they can comfort themselves with food?

For the most part, such depressed communities also lack appliances, transportation, and jobs.
I think their efforts to complete basic tasks with inferior tools would keep them occupied; physically, mentally, and to some degree, emotionally.

I don’t know, but they find something. People adapt to shit very well, whether said adaptation comes from centuries of cultural conditioning or sudden, impacting life changes. Their social structure, beliefs and culture must bring them something because they wouldn’t have all the latter if they were operating on mere survival instinct.

Food is by no means the sole source of comfort, especially to people who only ever know it as the bare bones of survival. On the other hand I would assume what little food they do get probably does act as comfort, just as one’s shitty paycheck does when it at least clears rent for a month.

HC . I’ve seen that show once. It’s pathetic. It’s REALLY hard for a otherwise healthy person to eat their way to 600 lbs. At some point, others are bringing them food, and lots of it…I had a lady die at a hotel I used to work for many years ago. She was about 700 lbs. I worked there for 2 years, and never knew she lived there because she couldn’t leave. The EMS team had to cut the wall to get her out….

To the question.

Many seem to do easy ,cheap drugs ,like huffing paint. Others seem to find comfort degrading or hurting others. Being a bully can be addictive to some.

In some cases people cut themselves, or constantly start fights to hurt themselves.

There are many ways people get stuck in a rutt.

For comfort? Usually religion. And we can all see how far that has gotten them.

What does that say, that if they had food to stuff themselves silly each week as most in the US they would be less religious, or disingenuous with it as here in the US?

^For some. Religion is a ‘crutch.’ Some people can’t stand without some sort of ‘crutch.’

They are incapable of dealing with reality (very common, and understandable,) so they need something to prop them up. Give their life meaning,or distraction. Overeating , religion, drugs etc…

HC . I think people take things for granted when those things are not rare. Sometimes…..So, I think people who overeat would over do whatever they have access too.

A ”crutch” to me is something to get you through, or by, for me it was the other stuff that was the crutch.

They are incapable of dealing with reality (very common, and understandable,) so they need something to prop them up. Give their life meaning,or distraction. Overeating , religion, drugs etc…
Those who need to chase money, have a larger brass name tag on the door, something to keep them high or buzzed, or serial meaningless relationships, etc. would be applying ”crutches” if I were to take the gist of your comment to heart. For some fortunate enough that bread is like pebbles on the street stuffing themselves with food would be the crutch.

^Yes . Food is the crutch for many who overeat.
