Is it Goethe's word on The Beautiful and Good?

Asked by arzikass (109points) January 28th, 2017

I’ve read that Goethe has said this sentence; “The beautiful is higher than the Good; The beautiful includes in it the Good.”
However I could not find the reference book of the quotation. Does anyone know the reference in German or English?

It seems Goethe did say this as Thomas Carlyle quotes it in Selections from Carlyle. He doesn’t say where it comes from though. Maybe someone who speaks German can help?

Yes dear flutherother, it is quoted by Carlyle and as far as I found, later, Oscar Wilde mentioned it as a sentence by Goethe.
