Do you know about the "Dark Web" or "Deep Web"?

Asked by gondwanalon (22872points) July 6th, 2017

Can you explain to me (a computer dummy) what the “dark web” is?

Yesterday my wallet was stolen. I quickly cancelled my credit card (thief tried to make 2 very large purchases at Target but couldn’t pass verification and was photographed).

My Medicare Part B card was in my wallet (I didn’t know that it has my SSN on it). My first thought is that I’m absolutely screwed (I still think that I’m screwed). So I purchased identity theft protection from “Experian®” and “LifeLock®”.

LifeLock said that it will monitor the deep & dark web forum for suspicious activity using my sensitive information. Kind of spooky. HA!

I’ve read a bit about it. Basically it’s the criminal Internet. A person in the know can buy verything from banned black market guns to children to identify theft. You name it. So that’s where they’re going to look for your ID. I wonder what they’ll do when they find it?

Deep web the invisible zone of the Internet that you can access only through special browsers. Ordinary track engines can’t detect it.
Most of the content is said to be illegal. I heard a lot of stories about child pornography, animal torture, weapons and drug dealing and other criminal activity in there.

I’m not sure what is the exact difference between dark and deep web.

There’s also the “Mariana’s web” named after the Mariana trench. It’s supposed to be the “deepest web”.
Seems like urban myths rather than anything real, but it’s interesting to hear about it.

Here’s one image about it: https://qph.ec.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-c1be228a4f0168997ada32d428c053d7

@Sneki2 “Deep web” is the part of the internet that search engine cannot touch. It doesn’t have to be illegal or so special that only certain browsers can access. Your posts on Facebook that are only visible for people in your friend list can be called deep web too. Deep web is just the web pages that aren’t accessible to the publish.

The criminal thing you’re talking about is the “Dark web”. Basically it’s the hideous deep web, where stuff is not seen and not meant to be seen.
