The original Latin village was probably founded in the 9th century BCE, but may have been an outpost as early as the 10th century BCE. So it’s likely to have been built gradually over the course of 100 years. Even if there had been a concerted effort to transform it from an outpost into a village, however, it still would have taken a few months to make it more than a very basic settlement. Furthermore, the Republic wasn’t created until 509 BC, which would be somewhere between 300 and 400 years later. And of course, the city is still being developed to this day. That’s why it is sometimes called “the Eternal City.”

Note: I am using modern archaeological estimates rather than the dates proposed by ancient Roman historians (who believed the city was founded in 753 BCE).

The Empire peaked at 117 C.E,

The most accepted date for the founding of the City of Rome is 753 B.C.E. From founding to peak, the span of time in which Rome was still building, lasted 870 years.

@zenvelo 753 BCE is not the most accepted date for the founding of Rome. It is the most familiar date, and it was the date accepted by the ancient Romans, but it is not accepted as accurate by modern historians.

You guys been Googling again?

@SavoirFaire Well, when I took Roman History (History 112A – The Roman Republic) we were told to consider the founding of the Republic in 529 B.C.E. as the start of our course,

If we use that as the point where Rome was no longer just a gathering spot on the Tiber, until the peak, then it took 646 years to build Rome.

@zenvelo Rome was more than a gathering spot on the Tiber long before the Republic was formed. Despite the lack of contemporary records, we know that it was a full-fledged kingdom for around 250 years. By the way, do you remember what the justification for marking the date of the Republic as 529 BCE was? Because that would have been 20 years before the last king was overthrown.

@SavoirFaire Despite @Dutchess_III thinking I am googling, it is all from memory, so maybe I am thinking of 509 BC.

I had no idea you were that old. You don’t look it @zenvelo. ;)

The question is meaningless as stated.

Dutchess_III's avatar

That’s true @stanleybmanly. That’s like asking “How long did it take to build Washington DC.” Well, it’s still being built.

josie's avatar

All I know is that it was NOT built in a day. So, at least two days.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Three days, at least.

Around 2,500 years. Rome is still being built.
