Could you suggest me a free phone number generator service?

Asked by Mimishu1995 (23628points) November 15th, 2017

I need to sign up for a website to get access to some hard-to-find files. But that website demands my phone number to sign up. I don’t feel comfortable providing my phone numbers at all. So do you know any website that provide free fake phone numbers for verification?

Side question: does anyone know how to use textfree.us? I signed up for that site to get a phone number, but for some reason the phone number kept changing and I couldn’t get any verificafion message to comfirm my account.

How about getting a cheap “burner” phone? That would be a legitimate number, but you only use it when you need to, and you can pay for one month at a time (select the lowest rate), and turn the service off when you don’t plan to use it.

Some of the problem of getting a mobile number maybe your location is not in the USA.

Textfree.us I think it can give phone numbers for multiple countries. It’s free, and I use it a lot.

@snowberry @Tropical_Willie That site accepts numbers from several countries, including my country. Actually I can do something similar to a burner phone. I can get an unused working SIM and use it to verify I have a number of throwaway SIMs at home, maybe I’ll dig through the trash. But my biggest problem is that I’m afraid the number can lead to my location. That site operates a lot like Facebook, demanding real names and phone numbers. I made a fake American name. Now I’m stuck at the phone number part. Or am I being too paranoid?

@SergeantQueen so how can I get a phone number? The phone number keeps changing whenever I reset the page.

I think you just click on one, then go through the registration process

@Mimishu1995 I just went through the process, you type in an area code and click the arrow next to the list of numbers after you have chosen one. If it’s just a burner number you may not need it to be an area code for your country.

@Mimishu1995 The area code for this region (western NY) is 585 That would be followed by the 7 digit phone number . Rochester is the big city in the area.

@Mimishu1995 Did you type in an area code, and click the arrow next to the list of numbers? It should have said that your number is now yours and that you need to verify with Facebook or Gmail

I did it. Now my problem is I want to see my number again but I don’t know how.

Haha! You’re supposed to write it down!

@snowberry oh. So now I understand what is wrong. Now I feel really stupid :D It’s my first time using something like that anyway :P

I will try getting a number again. If it fails, I will try using my throwaway numbers.

If you are on the computer, it should just be on one of the top corners. If it’s mobile, you click on settings and it will show up there.
