Why is Electoral College a fair way of doing democracy?

Asked by flo (13313points) November 28th, 2017

Does the question sound like I think it is not the fair way? For the record, it’s a plain question, no different from What causes a rainbow? or whatever other question.

Because without the electoral college, only large, urban areas and densely populated regions would be represented, due to the sheer number of people.

Furthermore, politicians would only campaign in and cater to people with populations large enough to swing an election.

Unfortunately it does level the playing field and favor Republicans because most people in large cities and urban sprawl between cities vote Democrat,

It’s not, as evidenced by last uear’s election where Hillary Clinton received 3 million more votes than Donald Trump. The will of the people was not respected. The electoral college system is a joke.

There, in two answers, are the two sides of the issue. Well done, Kardamom and myself.

I don’t think there are 2 sides. How is what I said about the will of the people not being followed, an incorrect statement?

You also can’t, and do not, have a level playing field if it “favors” (in your words) one party over the other.

@Yellowdog I don’t understand your last paragraph. “Unfortunately it does level the playing field…” if it does level the playing field why woud it be unfortunate?

More voters apparently does not mean fair.

The thing is some supporters or Hilary was saying it’s not the fair way, after she lost. The losing party can’t say the game/ the rule is not fair just because he/she lost

I would probably agree with you if my party was thus affected,

But what right does California have, for instance, to decide the election for the rest of us? Take ALL California votes out and Trump wins the popular vote by a landslide

Its not a level playing field if one place’s population decides for all of us.

btw—If Russia hacked the election, why didn’t Trump win the popular vote?

@Yellowdog I have to read and reread your post to understand your point, except for the last one, which I never thought about. By the way, is it hacked or_ influence with content_ in the sites like Facebook? I don’t know. But sometimes the opposite of what was intended happen.
