Was the Vendee uprising during the French Revolution about loyalty to the French monarchy, or really about Brenton nationalism?

The way I heard it, the rebellion pitted royalists backed by the Catholic church and Great Britain against the revolutionary government and those loyal to it.

It was a religious struggle, not a matter of monarchy nor a matter of nationalism.
