What (in the news) can you turn off on your smartphone, but still works as if it's on?

Is it showing your geographic location? Is the problem fixed?

It is location tracking by Google, even with the history turned off.

@flo It is a big deal to people who worry about privacy and being tracked. But people who use smart phones are already being tracked in a myriad of ways; this is just one more instance.
