Do you ever feel like you are wasting your life away?

Asked by SergeantQueen (12874points) August 24th, 2018

It’s 4 am and I just spent the past hour watching an infomercial about air fryers before I realized what I was doing.

Have you learned something about air fryers?

Enjoy being young, break your time up with a lot of different activities, hobbies and memory building experiences. Nothing has to be earth shattering or ground breaking, just different. Try to pick a job that has some meaning and does not cage you in an office somewhere. Once you get to mid-life it’s not hard to be sitting on the couch one day and realize that 10 years has passed by in just a blink.

The alternative would have been sleeping, or being unconscious.

I see this question in another way as “How to find out what my purpose in life is?”
Here is a quiz to take when you find yourself mindlessly watching TV.
There are loads of sites like this to occupy and learn on the way about what interests you for the long term.
Learn more about yourself. When people become bored it is a sign that you should do something different.Sometimes that is the only motive that people get when they are bored.
Here is a link to one quiz, have fun.

Every day..and it is a scary feeling at 60. When my sons moved out I lost myself and my purpose in life. I know I am not the only one with this feeling and I live on a farm and have few friends besides animals and no money to speak of. I will take the above test.

@MooCows
Sounds like you like to live in the country surrounded by nature. Have you considered Photography and or writing your experiences in life( autobiography perhaps)?
Take up painting, learn a new language..lots of interests.
Even drying flowers and plants and displaying them and possibly selling at craft fairs?
How about photos of the animals on the farm? These would be interesting to city folks etc
Create a website to talk and show how different living in the country is to city life the pros and cons etc You would have a unique take that others would like to hear or read about.

If you feel this way most of the time, you are probably depressed. Have you seen a doctor? There are medications and therapies that can help you to deal with depression so that it does not consume your life.

Are you just worried that you are not doing what “everbody else” (whoever they are) is doing? Constantly comparing yourself to other people is a fruitless pursuit that mostly leads to anxiety.

Are you a nice person? Do you donthings to help others? Volunteeeing your time to others, whether it be through an organized volunteer organization, or just by finding out what needs to be done in your own household, your own extended family, your own neighborhood, your own city, or your own country, or on your own planet, will keep you busy, and will be helpful to other people, and will give you less time to fret about your “what ifs”.

Find something that needs to be done, then do it. Offer to babysit your friend’s kids while she is at the doctor or needs to go shopping. Offer to walk your neighbor’s dog because they work long hours. Offer to clean your elderly neighbor’s house or mow their lawn or drive them to their appointments. Organize a “food train” for someone you know who has lost their spouse or who is going through medical treatments and can’t cook for their family, find out when and where the next community cleanup will be and then help clean up trash, and clear brush, help with fund raising at your neighborhood school, make some cookies or a pie for a homebound neighbor. Get the word out and help to register people to vote, and arrange transportation to the polls.

Find out who needs help around you, then get busy. You don’t have to be rich or the belle of the ball, you just need to be helpful.

Ladder climbing isn’t the key, being useful is.

@rojo there is more than one result you probably only looked at the highest score perhaps?
Yes we all could be better if we all grow more Spiritually…think yoga, meditation, quiet retreats, walks among nature which is my best thing to do and photograph as it reminds one of a greater universe etc
There are many such tests online such as the Ennegram, the Personality test. and more just Google them and learn about different ways of viewing oneself. It can be fun and exciting to learn. Mine was People orientated and suggested Volunteerism to assist others etc
I have done that for years and like this platform bettter since I also like writing.
