Which dinosaurs were alive when the asteroid hit causing the mass extinction?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37350points) August 21st, 2019

I know the many types of dinosaurs we see fossils of in the museums did not all live simultaneously. Which ones were around at the end? Was the T-Rex still living? What about the massive plant eaters like the brontosaurus?

Also, if you want the name of a single dinosaur instead of a group, substitute the suffix “ae” with -“us”

My previous answer was removed because it didn’t belong in “General”—but I am re-posting a corrected list.

The three major classifications of ages when dinosaurs were around, were the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods. The Cretaceous era ended the age of dinosaurs. Most people today believed it was a single cataclysmic event rather than a gradual change or dying out.

Anyhow, here is a list of Cretaceous dinosaurs—the last ones before the extinction.

A Wikipedia article would do better than a short answer on a Q&A website.
Here’s the list:

A

Albertosaurinae
Ankylosaurinae

C

Ceratosauria
Coelurosauria

G

Gettyia

H

Hadrosauromorpha

J

Jeholosauridae

K

Kritosaurini

L

Laurasiformes
Leptoceratopsidae
Lithostrotia

M

Maniraptoromorpha
Megaraptora

O

Orodrominae

P
Parksosauridae

R
Rebbachisaurinae
Rhabdodontidae

S
Saltasaurinae
Saurolophinae
Shingopana
Stenonychosaurus
Struthiosaurinae

T

Thescelosaurinae
Thyreophora
Turiasauria
Tyranasaurae (Tyrannosaurs Rex)

Many of the more famous dinosaurs, such as T. rex, Triceratops, and Velociraptor were wiped out by the mass extinction. Brontosaurus was alive during the Jurassic period, millions of years before the KPG mass extinction and would not have been alive to see what happened or be affected by it.
