Because for obviously necessary reasons they are a secret organization.

Because what they do is illegal. Setting fires, lynching, threatening people. You’re supposed to go to jail for those things. Being covered makes you unidentifiable.

I’ve heard it also was because they were supposed to be like ghosts in the night. But, I think probably they used white because it was cheap fabric, or because a lot of people already had white sheets at home when the organization was young.

They don’t want to be caught for doing illegal and immoral activities. At least they have the sense to hide their bad actions unlike trump.

Cowardice.

A lot of the members were fine upstanding members of the community, historically (businessmen, ministers, politicians, and so on) and they didn’t want their hobby (the KKK) to be associated with their public persona.

So no person can know who anyone else is. It’s anonymous. Nobody can be accused of anything if nobody knows who it is.

A lot of them have been rich andinfluential people who didn’t want to be recognized and put in jail. They were cowards and didn’t want to face the truth

To hide their black eyes…irony much.

Some of those that work forces, are the same that burn crosses.

The Klan has generally abandoned the hoods and robes. There may be some outlier groups that continue the practice, but it’s no longer mainstream. The organizers of the 2017 Charlottesville VA rally explicitly instructed attendees not to wear the regalia and, in fact, turned-away people who’d dressed in that manner.

The reason? Deliberate rebranding. The hoods and robes look silly and ignorant, so white supremacy is trying for a more clean-cut and seemingly-respectable appearance.

The Klan is no longer just one organization. There are about 30 chapters that are throughout the US.

Many states still have anti/mask laws. The KKK back in their hey day sparked some of the laws that were passed in some states.
