How long did people stay mad at William the Conqueror?

Asked by lucillelucillelucille (34325points) November 5th, 2019

For getting conquered by him…
Decades? Minutes Centuries? The weekend? A fortnight? Eternity?
Didn’t they think he’d be trouble, based on his last name alone? ;)

I think he got the last name after he conquered them; it wasn’t an advertisement in advance!

He was possibly William the Good for Nothing before. :-)

Oh I give far more credence to Richard the Lionheart
Now there’s a name to conjure with…eat your heart out David Copperfield.

@ucme -What do you think is a reasonable amount of time to stay mad at the one who kicked your arse? that is what I really want to know

ucme's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille Oh i’m very much a don’t get mad, get even type of fellow.
I imagine though that the timeframe depends on how long the arse smarts.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@ucme – Is there a formula for that?

ucme's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille Well, I thi…oh bugger…see you in pm’s :D

How long did the People stay mad? Not at all. It would have been Harold that was p.o.‘d at William, but not much more than that.

As far as the People, they just had a different bastard they had to kneel to.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@zenvelo – Were you the person who is related to Harold?

ucme's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille Fair enough, that’s me told.

zenvelo's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille Nope. But my Scottish grandmother had a Norman maiden name!

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@zenvelo Interesting stuff! My husband is a direct ancestor to that bastard.(Bill)
I find it very funny :)

janbb's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille I think you mean “descendant” not “ancestor”!

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@janbb – Yes. Thank you for correcting me. :)

The conquering wasn’t as upsetting as the changes he brought around how legal disputes worked (combat, no really) and putting his Normans in charge and ownership of places, etc. Some people were quite upset lastingly (the amount of time, as asked, would vary by person) by those changes, though they mostly had to learn to cope and adapt, unless they wanted to make an appeal, or challenge to single combat (well, those would be two forms of adapting, too).

I think people back then were either glad to be ruled by an iron fist or too bloody frightened to speak out.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Zaku -Thanks for your answer. I do wonder about the adaptability of people.
there’s a question in there somewhere

Judging by the fact that there was no murder or pillaging involved and my ex is still not talking to me 28 years later I would start there.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Vignette -So, no birthday cards for you?

Vignette's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille Nope no B-day cards. I do have quite the collection of bricks that are thrown through my front window every year on my Birthday. I make sure the window is wide open on my special day.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Vignette -Excellent plan,right there.

It might seem practical to understand and appreciate those self promotional monickers for what they’re worth. Willy the Conquerer & Lionhearted Dick should immediately bring to mind the penchant for the current lionization of Donald the stable genius
